A senior garda officer has told the Charleton tribunal there were rumours circulating in Garda HQ about garda whistleblower Sergeant Maurice McCabe while he worked there.

Detective Superintendent Frank Walsh worked as private secretary to the commissioner until 2016, dealing with confidential reporting and protected disclosure.

“There were rumours circulating about Gda McCabe” Dept Supt Walsh said. “The rumour machine was in full flight around that time.”

A distraught mother was today granted a five-year safety order against her teenage daughter who struggles with mental health issues.

The daughter, who just completed her Leaving Cert, suffers from bipolar disorder, the mother told the Dublin District Family Court.

She said her daughter recently went on medication and had been feeling better, but a psychologist recommended that she stop taking sleeping tablets as they are highly addictive. “And now the anxiety is back,” the mother said.

A woman found out she was a grandmother after a toddler and her older brother turned up on her doorstep with DNA test results, a court heard today.

The grandmother, who was seeking access visits with her granddaughter, told the Dublin District Family Court that up until last summer she was under the impression that the girl in question was her nephew’s daughter.

But then last summer, the young girl and her brother turned up at the grandmother’s door, with results from a DNA test, showing that the grandmother’s son was father of the young girl.

A false allegation of rape remained on a file on garda whistleblower Sergeant Maurice McCabe until 2017, the Charleton tribunal heard today.

The allegation was forwarded to the Garda Commissioner in May 2014 by Assistant Commissioner Kieran Kenny (now retired) after he received a report from Chief Supt James Sheridan.

The DPP directed in 2007 that no prosecution should be made against Sgt McCabe following an allegation of inappropriate touching by Ms D in 2007. A Tusla file on Sgt McCabe was subsequently opened after Ms D sought counselling in 2013, to which allegations from ….read more

A man who repeatedly threatened his ex-partner weeks after beating her up because he refused to accept their relationship had ended has received a suspended sentence.

Neven Vukovic (40) punched and kicked Fionnuala Ní Mhartín during the attack at her Dublin home in September 2015. The victim suffered a fracture to the bone around her eye amongst other injuries.

A senior Tusla executive has denied there was a cover-up after a false allegation of sexual abuse was placed in a file against garda whistleblower Sgt Maurice McCabe.

The agency’s chief operations officer Jim Gibson also told the Charleton tribunal, which is looking at claims of a smear campaign against Sgt McCabe, that he wasn’t aware of any evidence of improper garda meddling in the case.

“We as an agency have stated clearly in January of this year that we made serious case management mistakes,” Mr Gibson said.

A young father who owes the mother of his child nearly €6,000 in maintenance has been warned that he could go to prison if he does not start paying up.

Judge Gerard Furlong at Dublin District Family Court asked the father why he hadn’t paid the mother the €5,887 he owed her for the upkeep of their son.

The man replied he’d been “all over the shop for the last couple of months”.

A man who sexually assaulted his seven year old niece while they were out begging over 20 years ago has received a suspended sentence.

The victim told the court that she felt vindicated by his admission of guilt and did not wish to see him jailed. She had been beaten by her grandmother after she confided in her about the assault and, as a result, was afraid to come forward for years afterwards.

A man who set fire to a Dublin apartment complex, causing €1.25 million in damage and leaving 25 people temporarily homeless, was “out of his mind” on drugs and alcohol, a court has heard.

John McGovern (25) set fire to the Station Hill apartment complex at Clongriffin, Dubliln last November after rowing with this girlfriend, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard today.

A Tipperary man who raped a 12-year-old boy after luring him down a lane has received a five and a half year sentence.

Andrew Roche (28), with an address in Nelson Street, Clonmel, Tipperary, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to one count of orally raping the boy and one count of anally raping him on a date between December 25, 2008 and March 17, 2009.
