The Special Criminal Court has heard the “belief evidence” of a garda chief superintendent that a Dublin man was a member of the IRA.

The prosecution allege that Vincent Banks (47) purchased the car that was later used in the fatal shooting of Northern Irish prison officer David Black.

Mr Black, a 52-year-old father of two, was shot dead on November 1st 2012. He was driving to work at Maghaberry prison when the incident occurred.

Judges at the Special Criminal Court trial of a man accused of IRA membership will rule on Monday on the admissibility of garda interviews into evidence.

Defence lawyers at the trial of Vincent Banks (47), who the prosecution allege purchased the car that was later used in the fatal shooting of Northern Irish prison officer David Black, are objecting to the admissibility of a number of garda interviews conducted with the accused man.

A Limerick man has been found not guilty of threatening to kill and damage the property of another man.

The presiding judge at the Special Criminal Court said that although Larry McCarthy Jnr’s actions were “reckless, ill-considered and irresponsible”, the court was acquitting him of the charges.

Mr McCarthy Jnr (37), with addresses at the Old Cork Road and Cornmarket Villas in Limerick, had denied threatening to kill Noel Moore (74) and threatening to damage Mr Moore’s property at Windsor House, Donoughmore, Limerick on July 28th, 2015.

The prosecution allege that Vincent Banks (47) purchased the car that was later used in the fatal shooting of Northern Ireland prison officer David Black.

A man calling himself Paul McCann bought a Toyota Camry which the prosecution at the Special Criminal Court trial of a man accused of IRA membership allege was used in the fatal shooting of Northern Ireland prison officer David Black.

The court also heard that a Leitrim woman reported the car to gardai after noticing it parked near her home in the days before the killing.

Frederick “Freddie” Thompson is applying to the Special Criminal Court in Dublin to dismiss a murder charge against him, the non-jury court heard today.

Mr Thompson (36), with an address at Loreto Road, Maryland, Dublin 8, is charged with the murder of David Douglas (55) at Bridgefoot Street in Dublin on July 1st last year.

Michael O’Higgins SC told the court that his client was making the application under Section 4E of the Criminal Justice Act 1999.
