A convicted sex offender who was given a partly suspended sentence for robbery last May has been jailed after gardaí told a court that he was a danger to society.

In May 2017 Judge Melanie Greally imposed a four-year sentence on Munir Ghariani (26) and, taking into account the time he had spent in custody on this matter, backdated the sentence to May 19, 2016. She suspended the balance of the sentence.

Ghariani admitted attacking the woman and robbing her phone on a street “for the thrill”.

A man who stabbed his sister has avoided going to prison after the victim told a court she forgave her brother and had no animosity towards him.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Colm O’Hara (49) had mental health issues and had stopped taking his medication on the day he attacked his older sister.

O’Hara, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to assault of Miriam O’Hara causing her harm at her home on Edenmore Green, Raheny, Dublin on June 23, 2016.

The trial of a garda accused of harassing a State solicitor is continuing in legal argument in the absence of the jury.

Eve Doherty (49), a garda based in Dublin, is charged with harassing Elizabeth Howlin between September 2011 and March 2013 and making false statements claiming Ms Howlin was perverting the course of justice.

Ms Doherty has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Her trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court began last week and is scheduled to run to end of the month.

A supermarket security guard who was caught with nearly €10,000 worth of cannabis and cocaine will be sentenced to 240 hours of community service provided he is eligible, a judge has said.

In Dublin Circuit Criminal Court today, Judge Karen O’Connor said she would sentence Joseph Moore to community service in lieu of a three-year prison term, provided he was deemed suitable by the Probation Service.

A garda accused of harassing a State solicitor could not be linked by any computer used by her to a photograph of the solicitor used on abusive posters, a jury has heard.

Eve Doherty (49), a garda based in Dublin, is charged with harassing Elizabeth Howlin between September 2011 and March 2013 and making false statements claiming Ms Howlin was perverting the course of justice.

A State solicitor who was allegedly harassed by a garda has told a jury that she had no idea how a “disgruntled” person would know her personal details.

Eve Doherty (49), a garda based in Dublin, denies harassing Elizabeth Howlin between September 2011 and March 2013 and making false statements claiming Ms Howlin was perverting the course of justice.

At the time Ms Howlin worked as a directing officer with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). She told the jury she was involved in deciding whether or not to direct prosecutions in criminal cases.

A garda has gone on trial accused of harassing a State solicitor by describing her as politically corrupt in a series of “hideous” and “vitriolic” letters and emails.

Eve Doherty (49), a garda based in Dublin, has denied harassing Elizabeth Howlin between September 2011 and March 2013 and making false statements claiming that Ms Howlin was perverting the course of justice.

A jury has acquitted Republic of Ireland soccer player Jeff Hendrick of committing violent disorder during a nightclub row in Dublin city four years ago.

During a four day trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, Darren McDermott claimed that after a verbal row in Krystal nightclub Mr Hendrick pulled him out of a taxi. Mr McDermott said he was then chased down a lane by other men.

A man who raped his young niece and molested her sister has been jailed for ten years.

Francis Rafferty (68) admitted the sexual assault of his young nieces but said he believed his behaviour was harmless.

Rafferty of Botanic Avenue, Drumcondra, Dublin pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting one girl when she was aged between nine and 12 years old between 2005 and 2008.

After a trial at the Central Criminal Court, a jury convicted him of two counts of raping this victim and of sexually assaulting her older sister. He was acquitted of two other counts of raping the younger girl. He had ….read more

A jury has convicted an Egyptian national of raping a woman he met after she became lost on a night out in Dublin city.

Mohamed Okda (30) was staying in a friend’s flat in the city in February 2014 when he met the woman in an upset state.

Okda, formerly of Coolfin, Rathdowney, Co Laois had pleaded not guilty to two counts of raping the woman and one count of sexual assault at a flat in Dublin city centre on a date on February 9, 2014.
