A jury has begun deliberations in the trial of a Laois man accused of raping a married mother who he met after she became lost on a night out in Dublin city.

The 30-year-old man was staying in a friend’s flat in the city in February 2014 when he met the woman in an upset state.

The defendant has pleaded not guilty to two counts of raping the woman and one count of sexual assault at a flat in Dublin city centre on a date in February 2014. Neither party can be identified for legal reasons.

The row between professional footballer Jeff Hendrick and another man was just “drunken handbags”, according to his barrister.

Mr Hendrick and a co-accused, Jonathan Doran (26), have both denied charges of committing violent disorder at Harcourt Street, Dublin on October 12, 2013. Mr Doran is also charged with assault of Darren McDermott causing him harm on the same location and has denied this charge.

Mr McDermott has given evidence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court that Mr Hendrick (25) dragged him from a taxi outside a nightclub shortly after a verbal row inside the club. He said he ….read more

A Dublin man has said that he was left with multiple fractures to his jaw following an attack by a group of men minutes after professional footballer Jeff Hendrick dragged him from a taxi stopped at traffic lights.

Mr Hendrick (25), originally from Kilmore Drive, Artane, Dublin but now living in the UK, pleaded not guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to committing violent disorder at Harcourt Street, Dublin on October 12, 2013.

A Cork man has been acquitted of charges relating to an attempted armed burglary of the home of a Cork businessman four years ago.

Niall Fitzpatrick (50) of Corrin Close, The Glen, Cork, had denied a total of four charges arising from an incident at the home of Patrick Glavin on August 11th, 2013.

He had pleaded not guilty to possession of a Remington 12-guage pump-action shotgun and possession of ammunition at Mr Glavin’s home in Rougrane, Glanmire, Co Cork.

He had also pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted burglary and attempted aggravated burglary at Mr Glavin’s home.

A judge has agreed to give one last chance to a convicted sex offender who poses a risk to public safety.

Munir Ghariani (26) received a suspended jail term last May after he admitted attacking a woman on a street “for the thrill”. At the time, Judge Melanie Greally warned Ghariani that she would have “no hesitation” in reactivating the three-year sentence if he broke any of the conditions for his release.

Today the Probation Service brought the case back before Judge Greally because of his failure to meet with Probation Officers.

Prominent sports journalist and author Tom Humphries is to be sentenced next month for the sexual exploitation and defilement of a child.

Humphries (54) of Corr Castle, Sutton, Dublin pleaded guilty last March to six sexual offences against a girl under the age of 17.

He could not be publicly named on that date because he was facing trial for further offences.

This morning those charges were dropped by the Director of Public Prosecutions. Humphries, a former Irish Times journalist, was present in court for the short hearing.

A man who admitted sexually molesting his young niece described his behaviour as harmless, the Central Criminal Court has heard.

One of the victims told the court that she went from “playing with dolls to planning her death” after the abuse began.

The Dublin man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victims, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting one girl when she was aged between nine and 12 years old between 2005 and 2008.

After a trial at the Central Criminal Court, a jury convicted him of two counts of raping this victim and of sexually assaulting her older sister. ….read more

A taxi driver who “snapped” and ran down a passenger who ran away without paying the fare has had his four year driving ban lifted.

David Ryan (59) pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm to Eoin Daly at Carysfort Park, Blackrock on April 7, 2011.

In July 2014 Judge Patricia Ryan suspended a sentence of three years and banned him from driving for four years.

Today lawyers for Ryan asked the court to reinstate his driving licence as he needed it for his work as a rural publican in Cappaghwhite, Co. Tipperary.

Lawyers for a professional boxer who assaulted a nightclub bouncer have asked a court to strike out the charges so he can take up a significant fight contract in the US.

Jamie Kavanagh (27) was part of a group which attacked door staff at Dublin’s Copper Face Jacks nightclub in what the court heard was “an explosion of violence”

Derek Cooney BL, prosecuting, said that that Kavanagh “got caught up” in the brawl with the other men who he had met up with earlier during his father’s funeral in September 2014.

A Central Criminal Court jury has acquitted a man of raping a woman on a first date after they met on Tinder.

The Dublin man (35) was alleged to have raped the university student in his car after driving her up to the Dublin Mountains. He pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to rape at Kilmashogue Lane, Rathfarnham, Co Dublin on September 11, 2014.

On day seven of the trial, the jury of six men and six women returned a verdict of not guilty after just over four hours of deliberations.
