An electrician who was caught with €30 worth of cannabis has been fined, with a judge reminding the defendant that his profession “doesn’t go hand in hand with cannabis too well”.

Daniel Sheekey (42), of Donomore Avenue, Tallaght, Dublin 24, pleaded guilty at Tallaght District Court to possession of cannabis at Whitestown Way on September 1, 2024.

Judge Catherine Ryan noted Sheekey had no legal representation because of the ongoing solicitors’ strike and asked whether he was sure he wanted to proceed.

Sheekey told the judge he was pleading guilty to the charges and wanted the case finalised that day.

When Judge Ryan asked how he would like to deal with the matter, Sheekey replied: “Well, how would you like to deal with the matter, judge?”, prompting laughter from the courtroom.

Sheekey claimed the cannabis gardai found in his bag belonged to someone else and that he was carrying it for them.

Judge Ryan questioned whether the defendant was seriously suggesting the drugs found in his bag were not his.

Garda Patrick Prendergast told the court Sheekey had admitted on the spot that the cannabis was his and was for his own personal use.

Sheekey told the court he worked as an electrician.

“Working as an electrician doesn’t go hand in hand with cannabis too well – you can’t work well if you’re taking cannabis,” Judge Ryan said.

The judge also noted his 72 previous convictions.

Judge Ryan fined Sheekey €200, allowing two months to pay.

“As you probably know, with your history if you come before the court again, you may face a custodial sentence,” she warned.
