A Westmeath man faces a life sentence after being convicted of murdering the mother of his children by ‘strangling the life out of her’ two months after she had left him.

Danny Keena of Empor, Ballynacargy was on trial at the Central Criminal Court charged with the murder of 43-year-old Brigid Maguire on November 14, 2015; she and their two children had left him that September.

A man found guilty of raping a woman he met after she became lost on a night out in Dublin city does not accept the jury verdict, a court has heard.

Egyptian national Mohamed Okda (30) was staying in a friend’s flat in the city in February 2014 when he met the woman in an upset state.

Okda, formerly of Coolfin, Rathdowney, Co Laois had pleaded not guilty to two counts of raping the woman and one count of sexual assault at a flat in Dublin city centre on a date on February 9, 2014.

A Brazilian accused of murdering a man on a city street was racially abused and assaulted for no reason by the deceased and another man, a witness has told his trial.

Juraci Da Silva (36), with an address at Park Lane Apartments in Waterford, has pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to the manslaughter of 28-year-old James Banville at New Street in Waterford on October 8, 2016.

A jury has been sworn-in for the trial of a 33-year-old man accused of attempting to murder his sister in Dublin over a year ago.

Daniel O’Connell, with an address at Rosemount, Newpark, Co Kilkenny is charged with attempting to murder Olivia O’Connell at Scholarstown Park, Scholarstown Road, Knocklyon, Dublin 16 on April 25, 2016.

Mr O’Connell was arraigned before the Central Criminal Court this morning and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy swore a jury of six men and six women to hear the trial, which is due to begin tomorrow and is expected to last two days.

A witness at a murder trial has denied that he and the deceased started the trouble that led to a fatal knife attack on a city street.

Conor Hogan from Taghmon in Wexford told defence counsel, Colman Cody SC, that the accused man, a Brazilian meat factory worker named Juraci Da Silva, “started it” when he approached them in an alleyway and wouldn’t go away.

He also said he couldn’t remember racially abusing the Brazilian or calling him a “pervert” and a “paedophile”.

A man who strangled the mother of his two children to death has asked for a verdict of manslaughter rather than murder by reason of provocation as the woman, whom he had previously strangled to the point of dizziness, had told him he was a bad father.

The 55-year-old made the request through his barrister today during his closing speech in his murder trial.

An alleged victim of an assault in which his best friend was stabbed to death has denied racially abusing the Brazilian accused, who is on trial for murder.

Conor Hogan, from Taghmon in Wexford, admitted twice assaulting Juraci Da Silva before the Brazilian stabbed him and his friend James Banville, but denied a third assault and said he couldn’t remember telling Mr Da Silva to “go back to your own country”.

The teenaged son of a man, who strangled the boy’s mother, became emotional as he testified during his father’s murder trial this morning, describing the accused having previously threatened to kill her.

The boy, who is not being named because of his age, was giving evidence to the Central Criminal Court via live television link this morning.
