A man who is charged with assault causing harm to his then girlfriend during an alleged incident on Dublin’s southside over two years ago has been granted bail.
Daragh Fennell (21), of The Rectory, Stepaside, Dublin 18, is charged with assault causing harm to his former girlfriend on Enniskerry Road, Stepaside, on January 2, 2024.
Dún Laoghaire District Court heard that the injured party alleged she was kicked repeatedly in the leg during the incident, although no medical attention was required.
Judge Anne Watkin noted no injuries were reported and said she would accept jurisdiction.
The court heard that the parties are no longer in a relationship and Judge Watkin directed that there be no contact, direct or indirect, with the injured party.
Gardaí said there was no objection to bail and the court heard the complaint was made approximately 18 months after the alleged incident.
The accused, who works in digital marketing, has been living abroad in recent years, including in Thailand and Iraq. The court heard he has family living in Iraq as well as connections in Spain.
There was no objection to bail, with conditions including daily sign-on at Stepaside Garda Station and surrender of Mr Fennell’s passport, with the option to apply for its return in the event he wishes to travel, including to Iraq to visit family.
Counsel for the defence, Ms Silvia-Maria Crowley BL, applied for legal aid, which was granted.
Judge Watkin remanded Mr Fennell on bail to appear again before Dún Laoghaire District Court on July 7 for entry of a plea.
