Post office raider has jail sentence increased after DPP appeal

A raider jailed for robbing a post office in Carlow has had his prison sentence increased following an appeal by prosecutors.

Keith Chrystal (28), with an address on Neilstown Drive, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, had pleaded guilty at Carlow Circuit Criminal Court to robbery, assault causing harm, possession of an imitation firearm, unlawful use of a vehicle and criminal damage arising out of an incident at Leighlinbridge Post Office on March 3, 2016.

He was given an effective two-and-a-half year jail term by Judge Carmel Doyle on July 20, 2016.

Bail refused for man accused of threatening to kill gardai

A man accused of threatening to kill two members of An Garda Siochana has had his High Court bail application refused.

Patrick O’Reilly (49), with an address at Brownswood, Enniscorthy in Wexford, faces two charges of threatening to kill Garda Paul Donoghue and one charge of threatening to kill Detective Inspector John Hunt on dates in February at locations in Limerick under Section 5 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Man pleads not guilty to murder at pigeon club

A Dublin man accused of murder at a pigeon racing club has pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court.

Christopher McDonald (34), with an address in the East Wall area of Dublin, is charged with the murder of 36-year-old Keith Walker at a pigeon club on Shelerin Road in Clonsilla on June 12, 2015.

When arraigned this morning he replied, “not guilty,” before Justice Patrick McCarthy, who swore a jury of six men and six women to hear his trial.

Cyclist beaten and stabbed after accepting compensation for collision, trial hears

A Limerick man was beaten up and stabbed in the leg after agreeing to accept €5,000 in compensation for a collision with a motorcyclist, the Special Criminal Court has heard.

The prosecution case is that Larry McCarthy (37) was among a number of people who threatened to use “unlawful violence” and assaulted David Foran, who earlier that month had been knocked down and then offered compensation by a motorcyclist.

Mr McCarthy, with an address at Tower Lodge, Crossgalla, Old Cork Rd in County Limerick has pleaded not guilty to assaulting Mr Foran at Cornmarket Villas on November 25th, 2014.

Jury to decide whether 55-year-old cleaned up murder scene under duress

A 55-year-old man has gone on trial charged with impeding the investigation of a homicide, where the deceased died from “a violent and bloody assault” before his body was dumped on a beach.

Aivars Sondors with an address at Sycamore Close, Termon Abbey in Drogheda was arraigned before the Central Criminal Court this morning.

He is charged with three counts of assisting an offender on September 9th or 10th 2013 by impeding the apprehension or prosecution of Marius Gaizutis, knowing or believing him to have unlawfully killed 44-year-old Audrius Butkus.

Traffic cops made explosives find after stopping driver who failed to pay for fuel

A Tipperary man who pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court to possession of two pipe-bombs, a pistol and ammunition will be sentenced next week.

Dylan Cahill (24), of Lower Irishtown, Clonmel, Co Tipperary pleaded guilty last April to the possession of a .380 calibre Colt semi-automatic pistol and four rounds of .380 calibre ammunition at Sradrine, Glefarne, Co Leitrim on May 13th, 2015.

He also pleaded guilty to the possession of two improvised explosive devices, or pipe-bombs, at the same place on the same date.
