Jury deliberating in Tinder rape trial

A jury has begun deliberating in the trial of a man accused of raping a woman on their first date after they met on a computer dating site.

The Dublin man (36) is alleged to have raped the university student in his car after driving her up the Dublin Mountains. He has pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to rape at Kilmashogue Lane, Rathfarnham, Co Dublin on September 11, 2014.

Man jailed for 13 years for abusing four nephews

A Carlow man who sexually abused four of his nephews has been jailed for 13 years.

The four brothers, some as young as six, were separately abused by the man when they visited his home. He was convicted after a trial of abusing the eldest boy and then pleaded guilty in relation to the three younger boys.

In their victim impact statements, the boys described how the abuse had devastating impacts on all of their lives. One of the victims said he felt guilty after finding out his brothers had also been abused.

Man accused of concocting road accident withdraws damages claim

A man who denied claims by an insurer that he colluded with others to “concoct” a road traffic “rear-ending” incident in which he allegedly suffered a back injury has withdrawn his High Court damages claim.

The action was brought by Anthony Davitt (46), an asphalt contractor from Ferns, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, who as a result of the decision to withdraw the case is facing a legal bill estimated to be well into five figures.

A man who stabbed his brother in the back in broad daylight has been jailed for seven years with the final three suspended.

Mei Hui Chen, 37, of no fixed address, was convicted of assaulting his brother, Michael Chen, by a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court jury after a week long trial earlier this month.

He had pleaded not guilty to assaulting Mr Chen causing him serious harm and assaulting him causing him harm on June 8, 2016. The jury found him guilty on both charges.

Supreme Court hears bid to block deportation of man with alleged links to Islamic terrorism

The Supreme Court has reserved its decision in an appeal by an Algerian man with alleged links to Islamic terrorism against his removal from the State.

The deportation order was issued by the Minister for Justice after gardaí informed her department the activities of the man and his associates were “of serious concern” and “contrary to the State’s security”.

The State claims the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is involved with islamic terrorism and was convicted of terrorism offences in Algeria and France. He claims he is innocent and not a member of any terror group.

Jury to begin deliberating in Cork murder trial

A jury will tomorrow begin considering whether a man who admits stabbing his girlfriend to death is guilty of murder or manslaughter.

Darren Murphy (40), of Dan Desmond Villas in Passage West, Co Cork, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Olivia Dunlea at her home in Pembroke Crescent on February 17, 2013.

Mr Murphy pleaded guilty to her manslaughter and admitted that he stabbed her in the neck and set fire to her home. His plea was not accepted and he is on trial at the Central Criminal Court.
