Limerick murder trial hears from school girls

A Limerick murder trial has heard from a number of school girls, who said they heard one of the accused men admit his part in the killing of a 43-year-old man.

The teenagers, who cannot be named due to their age, were giving evidence to the Central Criminal Court during the trial of three men charged in connection with the death.

Seán Flanagan (28) and Paul Colbert (46) of Lenihan Avenue, Prospect in Limerick City are charged with the murder of Gerard McMahon on January 18, 2012. They have pleaded not guilty to murdering him around 12.30am outside another house on Lenihan ….read more

Drunk man who had hunting knife for his own protection avoids prison

A MAN who was drunk and carrying a six-inch hunting knife and screwdriver claiming they were for his own protection has escaped a prison sentence.

Erik Keder (27) of Seamount View in Swords, Co Dublin was ordered to complete 240 hours community service in lieu of a six month prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of the implements at New Haggard Bridge in Lusk on March 14th, 2012.

Firearms accused allowed bail variation to take up work as security guard

Special Criminal Court

A Lithuanian man charged with the possession of a handgun has been granted a bail variation to allow him take up work as a security guard.

Eimantas Valteris (30) and his co-accused Patrick McDonagh (49) were arrested by gardai in June in counties Louth and Meath as part of an ongoing operation to counter dissident republican activities in the border area.

Mr Valteris is the first Lithuanian to be charged before the Special Criminal Court.

The accused man, with an address at Park Vale, Grange Rath, Drogheda, Co Meath, is charged with the unlawful possession of a .32 inch auto (7.65mm) calibre IZH ….read more

Defence witness disagrees with Deputy State Pathologist

A pathologist has told the trial of a man accused of killing his friend in Co. Wexford two years ago that the deceased’s jaw was fractured by a fall down the stairs and not from a punch.

Michael Furlong (36) of Meadowfield, The Moyne, Enniscorthy has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Patrick Connors (37) between April 28 and April 29, 2011 at apartments known as Carriage Túr in Enniscorthy.

Deputy State Pathologist Dr Khalid Jabbar previously told the court there were two causes of death – firstly sharp and blunt force trauma to the head and secondly acute alcohol intoxication.

Former Anglo head of treasury to stand trial on Revenue offences

A FORMER head of treasury at Anglo Irish Bank is to stand trial on Revenue offences.

Tiernan O’Mahoney is accused of hiding a bank account from the Revenue Commissioners and is to face trial on indictment, Dublin District Court was told today.

The 54-year-old was the bank’s head of treasury from 1985 until 2005. Anglo subsequently collapsed, was nationalised in 2009 and later rebranded the Irish Bank Resolution Corporation (IBRC), which is now special liquidation.

Mr O’Mahoney is facing four charges contrary to the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997 and made no reply when he appeared at Dublin District Court today following his arrest ….read more

DNA of deceased found on clothing, murder trial hears

A Limerick murder trial has heard that DNA matching the dead man’s was found on the clothing and shoes of one of the men accused of murdering him.

A forensic scientist was giving evidence to the Central Criminal Court during the trial of three men charged in connection with the 43-year-old’s death.

Seán Flanagan (28) and Paul Colbert (46) of Lenihan Avenue, Prospect in Limerick City are charged with the murder of Gerard McMahon on January 18, 2012. They have pleaded not guilty to murdering him outside his cousin’s house, also on Lenihan Avenue.
