Judges to rule on whether IRA membership case will proceed

The judges at the Special Criminal Court trial of a Louth man accused of IRA membership will rule tomorrow on whether the case can go any further.

Michael Connolly (44) of Grange Drive in Dundalk, County Louth, has pleaded not guilty to membership of an unlawful organisation, styling itself Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the Irish
Republican Army, otherwise the IRA on December 16th, 2014.

It is the prosecution’s case that Mr Connolly was observed by Gardaí driving in convoy along the N52 with a man who was later found with two improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Former Anglo Irish Bank chairman Sean FitzPatrick has said his prosecution for allegedly misleading the bank’s auditors about millions of euro in loans was a difficult time for him and his family.

Mr FitzPatrick was speaking outside the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin city after a judge said that he intends to direct the jury tomorrow to acquit him of all charges.

Woman could have been paralysed by stab wound before inhaling fumes, murder trial hears

A 36-year-old woman, whose body was found in her burning home, could have been paralysed by a stab wound to her neck before inhaling fumes from the fire, her boyfriend’s murder trial has heard.

The court heard today that Olivia Dunlea might have died as a result of one of six stab wounds Darren Murphy admits inflicting or the fumes from the fire he admits setting in her bedroom afterwards.

Action brought by man who claimed taxi driver ran over foot and drove off with his mother is settled

A High Court action brought by a man who claimed a taxi driver drove over his foot has been settled following talks between the parties.

Thomas Conlon (38), a psychiatric nurse of The Maples, Bird Avenue, Clonskeagh, sued Frank Daly, Mourne Road, Drimnagh, a taxi driver with Local South Side Taxis, over an incident that he claimed occurred on April 25th, 2014.

Mr Conlon claimed he ordered a taxi from Local South Side Taxis and Mr Daly pulled up at 6.30pm that evening.

Mother suffering from personality disorder described son as “fake child” on day she killed him

A mother who was suffering from a personality disorder described her two-year-old son as a “fake child” on the day she killed him by stabbing a pair of scissors into his neck, a court heard this morning.

Hazel Waters (47) of Ridge Hall, Ballybrack has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her son Muhammad Hassan Khan between 15-16 October, 2014.

The toddler, described as a lovely, happy and thoughtful little boy, was found dead in the bedroom of their home on October 16. It also emerged in court that social workers were trying to contact Ms Waters to arrange a meeting ….read more

“Whistleblower” tells High Court that accountancy firm made “fairly scandalous” comments

A woman has rejected claims by Accountancy firm Grant Thornton that she has disseminated or retained any confidential material contained on a computer disk the firm sent to her in error.

Gerardine Scanlon told the High Court that some “fairly scandalous” comments were made about her on behalf of Grant Thornton, including that she had demanded €1m to make the case go away or that she has breached ordered previously made by the High Court.

She added that she sees herself as “a whistleblower” in respect of a data breach by Grant Thornton.
