Murder accused denied using knives on friend

A man accused of murdering his friend in Co. Wexford two years ago told gardai that he did not kill him and denied using kitchen knives to cause lacerations to his scalp.

Michael Furlong (36) of Meadowfield, The Moyne, Enniscorthy has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Patrick Connors (37) between April 28 and April 29, 2011 at apartments known as Carraig Túr in Enniscorthy.

Today memos of garda interviews conducted when Mr Furlong was rearrested the following September were read to the court.

Man caught with stolen monkey in court again over insurance matters

A TRAINEE football coach appeared before Swords District Court on charges of driving without insurance, two days after he was convicted of possesssing a stolen monkey.

Paul Murtagh (29) of Clonshaugh Heights in Clonshaugh, Co Dublin is alleged to have been driving without insurance on two occasions this year.

It is alleged he was stopped on April 17th for having no insurance at the Malahide Road. It is further alleged he was stopped on September 2nd at Feltrim Road in Swords for a similar offence.

Defence solicitor Mr Patrick Jackson requested a date for hearing for both matters.

Seized CCTV system was missing from home of accused, jury hears

An expert witness has told a Limerick murder trial that a CCTV system seized from a house in the city was the one missing from the home of the accused men shortly after the killing.

The electronic engineer was giving evidence to the Central Criminal Court during the trial of three men charged in connection with a 43-year-old man’s death.

Seán Flanagan (28) and Paul Colbert (46) of Lenihan Avenue, Prospect in Limerick City are charged with the murder of Gerard McMahon on January 18, 2012. They have pleaded not guilty to murdering him outside his cousin’s house, also on Lenihan Avenue.

Student charged with murder of archaeologist further remanded

A 28-YEAR-OLD student charged with the murder of archaeologist Emmet Connolly, who died following a stabbing in Cootehill in Cavan in September, has been further remanded in custody.

Mr Connolly, 32, from Rockcorry, Co Monaghan had recently returned to Ireland after spending 18 months in Australia and had been socialising in Cootehill on Saturday September 28 when he went to a house at Lodge View estate.

His body was found at the house in the early hours on Sunday September 29 last.

Libyan once on UN’s al-Qaeda terror list invites assaulted detectives to tea

A LIBYAN-BORN man, who once featured on the United Nation’s al-Qaeda “terror list”, has offered to make tea for two Garda Special Detective Unit officers after he pleaded guilty to attacking them.

Ibrahim Buisir (50), who lives in south Co. Dublin was fined €600 and avoided a jail sentence when he apologised in court to the two female officers and told them: “I am sorry, next time you are at my house I will invite you in for tea”.

Deceased had possible defensive injuries, murder trial hears

A pathologist has told the trial of a Wexford man accused of murdering his friend that the deceased had possible defensive injuries.

Michael Furlong (36) of Meadowfield, The Moyne, Enniscorthy has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Patrick Connors (37) between April 28 and April 29, 2011 at apartments known as Carraig Túr in Enniscorthy.

Today Deputy State Pathologist Dr Khalid Jabbar told the Central Criminal Court that he conducted a postmortem at Waterford General Hospital on April 30, 2011.

He told the court that the cause of death was sharp and blunt force trauma with acute alcohol intoxication a contributing factor.
