Callely allowed to travel outside the country over Christmas

The High Court has varied the terms of former Fianna Fail politician Ivor Callely’s bail to allow him temporarily leave the jurisdiction.

The court heard Mr Callely, who was jailed for five months in July after admitting he he fraudulently claimed €4,207.45 in expenses from the Oireachtas on forged mobile phone invoices, wants to go to Scotland during Christmas.

Last month the High Court granted the ex Fianna Fail Junior Minister, TD and Senator bail pending the outcome of his judicial review action against the Minister and the Governor of Wheatfield Prison, where he had been incarcerated. The action ….read more

Dublin man jailed for nine years for falsely imprisoning father-of-one who was later found dead

A Dublin man has been jailed for nine years for falsely imprisoning a father-of-one whose naked body was discovered in a field two weeks after his violent abduction.

The deceased, Ciaran Noonan (29), had owed Mark Allen (36) drugs money and had been put under pressure in the months leading up to the attack.

The court heard a number of school children had been playing in the Russell Avenue area of East Wall when a gang of men jumped out of Allen’s black Volkswagen Golf and attacked Mr Noonan.

Clare man who fraudulently claimed €683,000 in VAT returns has sentence reduced

A Co Clare man who fraudulently claimed VAT returns from Revenue amounting to €683,000 and handled €45,000 worth of stolen silage wrap has had his overall prison sentence reduced by the Court of Appeal.

Derek Floyd (36), of Lower Mount Street, Tulla, Co Clare, was found guilty by a jury of 15 counts of filling incorrect VAT returns and 12 counts of claiming VAT remits to which he was not entitled between dates in 2001 and 2003.

He was sentenced to six years imprisonment with the final year suspended by Judge Raymond Fullam at Ennis Circuit Criminal Court on May 21, 2012.

CAB secures orders freezing €250K held in name of Thai national as part of international investigation

As part of an international investigation into alleged money laundering the Criminal Assets Bureau has secured orders freezing €250,000 held in the name of a Thai national invested with the Dublin branch of an international bank.

The bureau sought freezing orders in respect of monies invested for the benefit of Ms Jittisopa Siriwan aka Jitisopa Siriwan (aged 40 years) with an address in Bangkok, Thailand.

In proceedings against Ms Siriwan before the High Court, CAB says she is the daughter of a former Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Juthamas Siriwan.

Man who had sex with 16-year-old girl he contacted on Facebook to be sentenced next year

A man who had sex with a 16-year-old girl he contacted on Facebook will be sentenced next year.

The father of three, who cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity, was aged 27 when he met and had sex with the girl nine days after contacting her on the social networking site.

He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to two counts of defilement of a child in January 22 and February 4, 2013 at two locations in Dublin.

Judge Desmond Hogan adjourned sentencing to next February and asked for a Probation Service report on the man.

Appeal court upholds 10-year sentence imposed on ex-priest who abused 18 boys

An ex-priest who abused 18 boys over an 18-year period has lost an appeal against his 10-year prison sentence.

Peter Kennedy (75), with a former address at Ballinahown, Co Westmeath pleaded guilty to 27 counts of indecent assault in various areas of the country between 1968 and 1986.

He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on one count with all other counts taken into consideration by Judge Martin Nolan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on July 8, 2013.
