Man jailed for life for raping four daughters fails in appeal

The Court of Criminal Appeal has upheld the life sentence imposed on a man who raped four of his daughters over an 18-year period.

The three-judge court this morning ruled that sentencing judge Mr Justice Paul Carney was entitled to impose maximum sentence on the now 52-year-old man.

In December 2011 the man, who cannot be named in order to protect the identity of the victims, was jailed for life by Mr Justice Carney at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Castlebar, Co Mayo.

Prisoner tried to cut off growth on face due to pain

An inmate in Mountjoy prison attempted to cut off a growth on his face that was causing him extreme pain, the High Court has heard.

Prisoner Noel Reddington, who claims he has been denied proper medical treatment for a painful lump since his transfer from Cloverhill to Mountjoy prison last November, has launched a High Court action aimed at compelling the Prison Authorities to provide him with the urgent medical treatment he requires.

Convicted on-the-run rapist extradited to UK

A convicted Northern Ireland rapist who was on the run here for over a year has been extradited to the United Kingdom by the High Court.

Edward Gerard Connors (20) twice raped a 29-year-old woman – an American tourist – in Colin Glen forest in west Belfast in 2008.

Afterwards he fled to Dublin but later gave himself up and was sentenced to eight years with two years probation.

He was released from custody in 2012 after serving four years, however a warrant was issued by the courts in Northern Ireland as a result of an alleged breach of the terms ….read more

Deceased found with knife protruding from chest

A 31-year-old man found with a knife protruding from his chest and 21 stab wounds endured ‘a case of overkill’, a murder trial has heard.

Kamal El Habsati was found dead in his Dublin apartment on December 5th 2012. His employer had raised the alarm after he and his flatmate had failed to show up at work for a number of days.

His flatmate, Jacky Lumi, had left the country by the time the deceased was found, but later told Gardaí he’d stabbed his flatmate following a row about bills.

Murder jury told case based on circumstantial evidence

The prosecution has told the jury in the trial of a 30-year-old man accused of murdering a father-of two, that the case is based on circumstantial evidence.

Eugene Cullen of Derry Road, Crumlin has pleaded not guilty to murdering Seamus O’ Byrne (27) at Tymon Park North, Tallaght, on March 13, 2009.

The Central Criminal Court has heard that Mr O’Byrne was shot dead by a hooded gunman outside his home in front of his girlfriend and child.

It has also heard his girlfriend Sharon Rattigan tackled the assassin and was shot in the leg while seizing the gun from him.

The Special Criminal Court is expected to rule next week on legal issues relating to the detention and arrest of a man charged in connection with the murder of Northern Ireland prison officer David Black.

Vincent Banks (44), of Smithfield Gate Apartments in Dublin 7, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of withholding information in relation to the murder.

The trial has entered a voir dire, a trial within a trial to determine legal issues relating to the detention and arrest of the accused man, searches of his apartment in Smithfield and an address in Finglas, as well as issues on ….read more
