Man charged with 50 counts of sexual offences against two young girls will stand trial next month

A man charged with 50 counts of sexual offences against two young girls will stand trial next month at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

The 51-year-old man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was sent forward from the District Court last year in relation to the offences which are alleged to have happened on dates between 2007 and 2011 at locations in Dublin and Donegal.

The charges sent forward include 40 counts of child exploitation by inviting, inducing or coercing the alleged victim to engage in or participate in a sexual, indecent or obscene act. This ….read more

5-year sentence imposed on man involved in group attack on American tourists was excessive, appeal court finds

A man involved in a group attack on two American tourists in Temple Bar, who tried to stop the group from interfering with a man on the ground, could see a reduction in his prison sentence following a finding by the Court of Appeal.

Ian Dent (21), of Stanaway Road, Crumlin, Dublin 12, had pleaded not guilty to two counts of violent disorder at Merchant’s Arch opposite the Ha’penny Bridge and at nearby Crampton Quay on April 29 2012.

Judgement reserved in Garda Assistant Commissioner High Court action

The High Court has reserved judgment on an application by Garda Assistant Commissioner John Fintan Fanning for an injunction restraining any person being appointed as Deputy Commissioner.

Asst Commissioner Fanning claims Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan asked him about his views on “left-wing political extremism in Ireland” and on left-wing politicians during his interview for the Deputy Commissioner post which took place last March.

However, two members of the panel that conducted the interview said he was not asked about his personal views on left wing politics.

Suspended sentence for man who tried to rob bookies with umbrella

A man tried to use a large golf umbrella as a weapon in an attempt to rob a bookies after a mugger took his dole money, a court has heard.

Niall Flynn, (31) of the Granby Centre in Dublin, was given a suspended sentence of 18 months. He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to two counts of attempted robbery and one count of robbery.

He has 23 previous convictions including criminal damage, theft and burglary.

On August 30, 2014, Flynn entered Boylesports on Mary Street in Dublin brandishing an umbrella like a “javelin”, a garda said. ….read more

Criminal who spent 26 years of his life in prison is jailed over school book shop robbery

A homeless man who robbed a school book shop and a hotel with a scalpel has been jailed for two and a half years.

Peter Byrne (44) with a former address at Main Street, Tallaght, Dublin, pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery at School Supply Centre, Village Green, Tallaght and Abberley Hotel, Belgard Road, Tallaght on November 29 and 30, 2014.

Increased sentence for Limerick man who went on "rampage" and slashed man's face in unprovoked attack

A Limerick man who went on “a rampage” and slashed the face of a 22-year-old in an unprovoked attack has had his jail term increased following an appeal by prosecutors.

Anthony ‘Tony’ Kelly (24), with an address at Lilac Court, Keyes Park, Limerick, pleaded guilty at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing serious harm at Catherine Street Limerick on May 13, 2011 as well as robbery and theft in separate incidents.

He was sentenced to four years imprisonment with the final two suspended by Mr Justice Carroll Moran on February 10 2012.
