Cavan murder trial jury suspends deliberations for third night

The jury in the Central Criminal Court trial of a Polish national accused of murdering a Romanian man in Co. Cavan last year has suspended its deliberations for a third evening.

Przemyslaw Trebacz (35) of Bramble Rise, Killynebber, Cavan has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Costel Catalin Cretu (38) at Connolly Court, Connolly Street, Cavan between October 13 and 14, 2012.

He has pleaded guilty to criminal damage to a door belonging to Brendan Cosgrove at Connolly Court on October 13, 2012.

The jury has now spent almost nine hours considering its verdict in the case.

Garda irritated at trial delay for possessing child porn

THE State has been allowed five weeks to complete a book of evidence in the case of a Dublin-based Garda awaiting trial for possessing child porn images and movies.

Joe O’Connor (53), who is stationed at a city-centre garda station, is accused of possession of 655 child abuse images at his west Dublin home between 30 July and 2 August 2011, charges he denies.

The charges, which are under section 6(1) child trafficking act 1998, relate to images and movie files of child explicit sex, child exposure and computer graphic images.

Murder accused thought mother had been replaced by imposter

A murder trial has heard that a 32-year-old man with schizophrenia thought his mother had been replaced by an impostor when he killed her at their Co Kilkenny home last year.

Niall Stapleton of Glebe Lodge, Kilfane, Thomastown has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Siobhan Stapleton (51) at that address on May 25, 2012. She died from blunt force trauma to the head, after being beaten with the handle of a garden fork.

The Central Criminal Court heard that the college graduate maintains that he is not guilty by reason of insanity.

Two men who admitted running CIRA pipe bomb factory jailed

Special Criminal Court

Two men who admitted running a pipe bomb factory for the Continuity IRA were jailed by the Special Criminal Court in Dublin today.

The court heard that Special Branch detectives who raided a semi detached house at Newbridge found one man wearing welders goggles and a boilersuit in the process of making a pipe bomb casing in a shed, while two completed casings were found nearby.

Four completed pipe bomb casings were later found by gardai hidden under a children’s slide in the garden , while other components for making pipe bomb casings were found on the property.

Senior Garda to stand trial for frustrating drink drive prosecution

A SENIOR Garda is to stand trial in February accused of attempting to frustrate a drink drive prosecution.

Detective Inspector Paul O’Brien with an address at Moyville, Rathfarhnam in Dublin had been summonsed to appeared at Dublin District Court today.

It is alleged that he consumed alcohol with intention of frustrating a prosecution under Section 4 of the Road Traffic Act 2010, at his home address on May 6 last.

The officer stood up when Judge Bryan Smyth asked if he was present but he did not address the court.
