Man jailed for rape and sexual assault of niece fails in appeal

A Dublin man who was jailed for 11 years for the rape and sexual assault of his niece has failed in an appeal against his conviction.

In March 2011, the now 46-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced to 11 years by Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy after being found guilty of the offences by a Central Criminal Court jury.

He had pleaded not guilty to 17 counts of sexual assault, four counts of rape, one count of oral rape and two counts of attempted anal rape against the girl at various addresses on dates from September 1998 to ….read more

Decision after Christmas on extradition of men wanted over body in suitcase

A judge will not decide until after Christmas whether to extradite two men wanted Holland in connection with the death of a man whose body was found inside a suitcase in an Amsterdam canal.

Dutch authorities are seeking the surrender of Kenneth Brunell (27) from Palmerstown and Barry McArdle (27) from Drimnagh, who were arrested on foot of extradition warrants issued in 2011.

The men are wanted to face trial in connection with the death of Keith Ennis (29) from Walkinstown, who was on the run from gardai at the time.

Catherine Nevin appeal bid to be heard in the next court term

A bid by Catherine Nevin to take an appeal against her conviction for murder to the Supreme Court will be heard in the next court term.

Nevin is seeking to bring her case before the Supreme Court on the basis that it raises points of law of exceptional public importance and that it is in the public interest that these should be decided on by the Supreme Court.

This morning at the Court of Criminal Appeal, solicitor Anne Fitzgibbon said that Nevin was seeking a date for a hearing of the case, which was expected to last one hour.

Murder accused warned witness to "keep his mouth shut", jury hears

A Dublin man has told a murder trial that the accused warned him to keep his mouth shut about what happened the night a 35-year-old man was stabbed to death.

Gary Walsh was giving evidence to the Central Criminal Court in the trial of a 36-year-old man charged with murdering a Dubliner by stabbing him more than 100 times.

Criostoir MacCarthaigh of An Gleann, Baile Phamar (Palmerstown), has pleaded not guilty to murdering David Whyte in Dublin between September 24 and 26, 2008.

Traveller couple win discrimination case

A TRAVELLER couple have been successful in a discrimination case against a hotel who refused them service on the day of their daughter’s wedding

Thomas and Mary Mahon of Rivervalley Grove in Swords succeeded in convincing the court of their complaint against The White House Hotel on the Ashbourne Road, The Ward, Co Dublin.

They said they were refused service on February 15th, by the bar manager Eddie Kinsella and owner Simon Ruthledge, after they made a booking to have an early meal with Mary’s elderly mother and 25 friends on the day of their daughter’s wedding.

FREE legal aid was granted today to “Hardy Bucks” actor Martin Maloney who is accused of attacking three men in a popular Dublin.

Maloney became famous for playing the role of Eddie Durkan in the hit mock documentary programme which was set in a west of Ireland town and followed the antics of five down on their luck young men.

The cult comedy started out as “webisodes” broadcast online but was later picked up by RTE and the cast also went on to star in the feature film titled The Hardy Bucks Movie which this year became a box office hit in ….read more
