IRA membership arrest of man charged in connection with David Black murder was unlawful

Special Criminal Court

The Special Criminal Court has ruled that the arrest on suspicion of IRA membership of a man charged in connection with the murder of Northern Ireland prison officer David Black was unlawful.

Vincent Banks (46), of Smithfield Gate Apartments in Dublin 7, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of withholding information in relation to the murder.

Last week, the trial entered a voir dire, a trial within a trial to determine legal issues relating to the detention and arrest of the accused man as well as searches of his apartment in Smithfield and an address in Finglas.

Woman pleads guilty to killing her eight-year-old son

A Cork woman pleaded guilty today to the manslaughter of her eight-year-old-son in 2012.

Diane Ward (45) of Harrison Place, Charleville will be sentenced next Monday (24) to allow time for psychiatric evidence to be given to the court.

Ward appeared at the Central Criminal Court today where she pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty of manslaughter.

The court heard that her plea to manslaughter was accepted by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Paul Burns SC prosecuting told the court that ‘psychiatric evidence is not available on today’s date’ and asked that sentencing take place next week to allow time for evidence to ….read more

Jury suspends deliberations in Tallaght murder trial

The jury has suspended its deliberations in the trial of a 30-year-old man accused of murdering a father of two in south Dublin.

Eugene Cullen of Derry Road, Crumlin has pleaded not guilty to murdering Seamus O’ Byrne (27) at Tymon Park North, Tallaght, on March 13, 2009.

The Central Criminal Court has heard that Mr O’Byrne was shot dead by a hooded gunman outside his home in front of his girlfriend and child.

It has also heard his girlfriend Sharon Rattigan tackled the assassin and was shot in the leg while seizing the gun from him.

Judgement reserved in appeal brought by former priest and serial child abuser Tony Walsh

The Court of Criminal Appeal has reserved judgment in the case of former priest and serial child abuser Tony Walsh, who is appealing against separate sentences of 16 years and 15 months imposed on him for the rape and sexual abuse of young boys in the nineteen seventies and eighties.

Walsh, who was known as the “Singing Priest” for his role in a travelling all-priest vocal group before he was defrocked, is serving a 16-year sentence imposed on him in 2010 for the rape and abuse of three school boys.

Murder accused said he would "end up killing" his flatmate, trial hears

A 42-year-old man charged with murdering his flatmate told their letting agent he was leaving because he’d ‘end up killing him’, his trial has heard

Kamal El Habsati (31) was found dead with a knife protruding from his chest in his Dublin apartment on December 5th 2012. Originally from Morocco, he had lived in Holland with his parents, and had moved to Dublin just months before he died.

His flatmate and colleague, Jacky Lumi, had left the country by the time the deceased was found. However, he later told Gardaí he’d stabbed Mr Habsati following a row about bills.

Man who claimed he wasn’t drivng car convicted and sentenced to five months for drink driving

A MAN who attempted to get into the back seat of a car he claimed he wasn’t driving has been convicted and sentenced to five months in prison and disqualified from driving for six years for drink driving.

Owen Mooney was also sentenced to four months in prison to run concurrently for driving without insurance.

Mooney (43) of Barry Close in Finglas West had pleaded not guilty before Swords District Court to drink driving and having no insurance on June 17th, 2013 at Santry Avenue.
