Man who told gardai to "go fuck your mothers" gets community service

A 21-year-old man who claimed he was intoxicated and used explicit language towards gardai including telling them to ‘go fuck your mothers’ because he had a drugs charge hanging over him, has been given community service work in lieu of a prison sentence.

Richard Woodruffe also called gardai ‘pricks’ and ‘wankers’ outside a nightclub after a fight broke out between a number of other men.

Woodruffe, of Mooretown Road in Swords, pleaded guilty before Swords District Court to using threatening and abusive behaviour and being intoxicated outside The Wright Venue at Airside Retail Park on October 28th last year.

Murder jury watches further CCTV footage

The jury has been watching further CCTV footage in the trial of a 30-year-old man accused of murdering a father of two in Dublin five years ago.

Eugene Cullen of Derry Road, Crumlin has pleaded not guilty to murdering Seamus O’ Byrne (27) at Tymon Park North, Tallaght, on March 13, 2009.

The Central Criminal Court was told that Mr O’Byrne was shot dead by a hooded gunman in front of his girlfriend and child in the driveway of their home.

Scottish separatist's bail application to be decided in coming days

A self-styled Scottish separatist, whose extradition to the UK was ordered by the High Court last year, must wait to hear if he can be released on bail while he awaits the outcome of a Supreme Court appeal.

Adam Busby (64), who has multiple sclerosis and is confined to a wheelchair, is wanted by British authorities on charges relating to the telephoning of hoax bomb-warnings and poison threats to various Scottish newspapers and agencies between November 2009 and June 2010.

Pensioner fails in appeal against IRA membership conviction

A Dublin pensioner who was sentenced to three years for IRA membership has failed in an appeal against his conviction.

Barry Fitzpatrick (71), with addresses at Ashlawn Park, Ballybrack, and Brighton Lodge, Foxrock, was convicted of IRA membership and sentenced to three years by the non-jury Special Criminal Court in February 2011.

The father-of-eight, who represented himself during his trial, had denied membership of an illegal organisation styling itself on the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the IRA on January 4th, 2009.

Man jailed for life for murdering his friend with "Bruce Lee" punches

A Tipperary father-of-two has been jailed for life for murdering his friend with what he described as ‘Bruce Lee’ punches because the victim ‘wouldn’t shut up’.

John Hannigan (46) of River House, New Quay, Clonmel had pleaded not guilty to murdering Anthony Fallon, also a father of two, in Clonmel on January 18, 2012.

He had also pleaded not guilty to assault causing harm to the 46 year-old on the same date at Mr Fallon’s flat on Abbey Street in the town.

However, a jury found him guilty of both counts today, following a trial at the Central Criminal Court.
