DAA and Ryanair launch High Court action to prevent proposed strike

The Dublin Airport Authority and Ryanair have launched separate High Court proceedings aimed at preventing next week’s proposed strike by Siptu members at the countries major airports.

The proposed industrial action, where workers are due to hold four-hour stoppage at Dublin, Cork and Shannon on Friday 14 March as the St Patrick’s weekend begins, arises out of long-running dispute over cuts in pension benefits at Aer Lingus and the DAA.

However, in their proceedings against Siptu both Ryanair and the DAA want the High Court to grant injunctions preventing the proposed strike from going ahead.

"Ann Summers woman" should be paid exemplary damages, court told

A woman who claims she injured her ribs when she was knocked down at an Ann Summers lingerie party is entitled to exemplary damages because “false evidence” has been given about her, the High Court has heard.

However lawyers for the pub which hosted the party have said Sylvia Deehan’s claim “flies in the face of common sense,” and should be dismissed.

Judgment in the action Ms Sylvia Deehan against the owners of the Lough Inn has been reserved and will be given at a later date.

Man who headbutted former partner avoids a prison sentence

A MAN who head-butted his former partner, breaking her nose, following an argument has avoided a prison sentence after he was ordered to complete community service work.

Peter Flood (32) was handed 240 hours community service work in lieu of a six month prison sentence. He was also bound to the peace for two years.

Judge Dermot Dempsey told Flood, who has 55 previous convictions, this is his ‘final opportunity’.

Supreme Court judgement delays attempted murder sentencing

The sentencing of a south County Dublin teenager who pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of a 17-year-old has been adjourned in light of a Supreme Court judgment.

Tadhg Costello (18) of Richmond Hill, Monkstown, had pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of Josh Leahy at Johnson’s Court in Dublin city on May 31, 2012.

He had also pleaded not guilty to assault causing harm to Mr Leahy and unlawful possession of a knife on the same date.

But Costello changed his plea to guilty of attempted murder on the fifth day of his Central Criminal Court trial last November.

Chef headbutted man and damaged his car in unprovoked attack

A COMMIS chef headbutted and punched a man who was waiting in a car outside a Chinese Takeaway for no reason, a court has heard.

Richard Devine (21) also rocked the injured party’s car before kicking in the doors causing €800 worth of damage.

Devine of Beneda, South Strand in Skerries, Co Dublin admitted he was drunk at the time of the offences and pleaded guilty before Balbriggan District Court to assaulting Shane Christy and causing criminal damage to his car in Rush, Co Dublin on May 3rd, 2013.

Jury to begin deliberations in trial of man charged with attempted murder of wife on her birthday

A jury will begin deliberating tomorrow on whether a 42-year-old man intended to kill his sleeping wife when he hit her over her head with a hammer on her birthday.

Andrzej Benko is on trial at the Central Criminal Court, charged with attempting to murder Joanna Benko while she was in bed sleeping on the morning of her 32nd birthday.

Mr Benko of Ladyswell Road, Mulhuddert admits hitting his wife over her head with a lump hammer at least three times. However, he has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder at that address on July 5, 2010.
