Mentally ill woman tried to force children off trams

A mentally ill woman who tried to force children off trams because she believed they were in danger has been found not guilty of attempted abduction by reason of insanity.

Theresa Chennaux (49), who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, later told gardaí she was trying to protect the children from a paedophile. She “ranted” illogically during garda interviews and accused gardaí of being vampires and sucking the blood of children.

Ms Chennaux, formerly of Tonlegee Ave, Coolock, Dublin and currently in the Central Mental Hospital, had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to attempting to take ….read more

IRA accused are served with books of evidence

Books of evidence have been served on two Dublin men charged with IRA membership at the Special Criminal Court today.

Kevin Braney (43) and Ciaran Maguire (29) were both arrested in August by gardaí investigating the activities of dissident republicans.

Mr Braney, with an address at Glenshane Crescent, Tallaght, Dublin 24 and Mr Maguire, of Kippure Park, Finglas, Dublin 11 are both charged with membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the IRA on August 2nd.

“I knew I was after killing her”: murder accused showed gardai how he choked former partner

A Westmeath man on trial, charged with murdering the mother of his two children, showed investigating gardaí how he had choked her following a row in her new home.

Danny Keena of Empor, Ballynacargy, Co Westmeath is charged with the murder of 43-year-old Brigid Maguire by strangling her.

The 55-year-old farmer has pleaded not guilty to murder, but guilty to her manslaughter at Main Street, Ballynacargy on November 14, 2015.

Detective Sergeant Brian Willoughby told the Central Criminal Court today that he had interviewed the accused a number of times following his arrest. The court heard that Mr Keena had turned up at ….read more

Declan Duffy pleads guilty to assault and false imprisonment

A man has pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court to assaulting one man and falsely imprisoning another man.

Declan Duffy (43), of Hannover Street West in Dublin, admitted today to assaulting John Roche, causing him harm, at the Towers, Garters Lane, Saggart, County Dublin.

He also pleaded guilty to falsely imprisoning Martin Byrne in Rathcoole/Saggart, County Dublin.

Both offences date from June 9th 2015.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt, presiding at the three-judge, non-jury court, remanded Duffy in custody until October 18th, when the case is listed for mention again.

“Wake up and help us”: Tribunal chairman requests new statements from senior gardai

The chairman of the Charleton tribunal has asked for new statements from four senior gardai by tomorrow morning about a meeting which led to referrals about garda whistleblower Garda Keith Harrison to the HSE and GSOC.

Supreme court justice Peter Charleton said that the tribunal was only now learning for the first time that there was a reference to retired Northern region assistant commissioner Kieran Kenny being consulted in relation to the garda conference, which was held on 8 October 2013 in Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

Convicted killer caught with €250k worth of “poor man’s cocaine”

A convicted killer caught in possession of almost €250,000 of “poor man’s cocaine” has received a four-year sentence.

Christopher Geraghty (48) of Oldtown, Santry, Dublin pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of control substances for sale or supply.

Judge Karen O’Connor sentenced Geraghty to four years imprisonment with the final 24 months suspended.

He was jailed for ten years in 2005 for the manslaughter of 54-year-old Anthony Jordan.

Gardaí searched Geraghty’s residence in Santry on October 15, 2014 and discovered several packages containing white powder.
