Man sentenced to 12 years for drugs possession has conviction quashed

The Court of Criminal Appeal has quashed the conviction of a man who was sentenced to 12 years for the possession of cannabis worth almost a quarter of a million euro.

The Director of Public Prosecutions will not seek a retrial of Wexford native Stephen Kelly (44) for the possession of cannabis resin with a street value of €245,000 in New Ross over eight years ago. The appeal court heard today heard that the drugs have since been destroyed.

Murder accused had splashes of blood on him, court hears

A woman has told the trial of a 21-year-old accused of murdering a man in north Dublin three years ago that she saw splashes of blood on him.

Michael Kinsella of Swiftbrook Close in Tallaght has pleaded not guilty to murdering Adil Essalhi (31) at Tyrrelstown, Co.Dublin on January 6, 2011.

Gemma Brady Deegan told the Central Criminal Court she was staying in her mother’s home in Tyrrelstown Plaza when the accused’s uncle Wayne Kinsella and Mr Essalhi came back there at around 3pm.

High Court orders extradition of man wanted in North on attempted hijacking charge

The High Court has ordered the extradition of a man to Northern Ireland to face ten charges including alleged assault, burglary and attempted hijacking there in 2006.

Michael Collins, who is currently serving a three year sentence in Cloverhill prison for aggravated burglary and endangerment, is wanted by UK authorities on a European Arrest Warrant which was issued last year and endorsed by the High Court on July 2 2013.

Mr Collins, who said he will contest the charges, could face life imprisonment or up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Dublin supporter told garda he would 'loaf the head off her' after day of drinking

A DUBLIN GAA supporter, who told a garda he would ‘loaf the head off her’ and threatened to kill other gardai following a day of drinking during last year’s All Ireland final, may escape a prison sentence if he is deemed suitable for community service.

Damien Murtagh of Latchfield Drive in Phibblestown in Clonee, Dublin 17 pleaded guilty to using threatening and abusive behaviour and being intoxicated at The Old Boro pub in Swords on September 22nd, 2013. He further pleaded guilty to violent behaviour at Swords Garda Station and refusing to give gardai his name and address.

Mass card salesman jailed for child porn possession begins appeal

A mass-card salesman who was jailed for 18 months for possessing hundreds of images of child pornography has begun an appeal against his conviction.

Thomas McNally (53) was jailed for 18 months in October 2011 after a Longford Circuit Criminal Court jury found him guilty on two counts of possessing child pornography on February 6th and 7th, 2006.

McNally, of Foynes Court, Longford, had pleaded not guilty to the possession of 676 images of child pornography which had been downloaded on to A4 sheets.

Teen who drove at 200km/h disqualifed and given four-month sentence

A TEENAGER who drove his car along the M1 motorway at Swords at speeds of up to 200kmph has been disqualified from driving and given a four month suspended sentence.

John Joyce caused other motorists to take evasive action to get out of his way and caused a patrol car to travel at 170kmph after him, Swords District Court has heard.

Joyce (19) with addresses at St Cronin’s Close in Swords and Moateview Avenue in Coolock pleaded guilty to dangerous driving on September 15th, 2013 on the M1 and failing to stop for gardai on the same date.
