Murder trial of Brazilian man to begin

A jury has been sworn-in to hear the trial of a Brazilian man accused of murder and assault causing harm in Waterford City.

Juraci Da Silva (36) had an address at Park Lane Apartments in Waterford on October 8, 2016 when he is accused of murdering 28-year-old James Banville at New Street in the city.

He pleaded not guilty to the murder charge but guilty to manslaughter at the Central Criminal Court today. His plea was not accepted by the State and his trial is due to begin in front of a jury of six men and six women tomorrow morning.

Kilkenny man who claimed he was in consensual sexual relationship with young cousin must await appeal fate

A Kilkenny man who claimed he was in a consensual sexual relationship with his younger cousin must wait to hear the outcome of an appeal against his conviction for rape and sexual assault of the then 14-year-old.

The 49-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his now 33-year-old cousin, was convicted by a Central Criminal Court jury of 15 counts of rape and oral rape and one charge of sexual assault following a trial. Publisher and authors of book on Kinahan crime gang apologise

A Dublin man has received an apology from the publishers and authors of a book about the Kinahan crime cartel.

The apology was made before the High Court to Mr Derek Cervi.

Mr Cervi had sued for defamation the publisher Penguin Random House Ireland Limited and the authors -journalists Owen Conlon and Mr Stephen Breen-of the book entitled “The Cartel: The Shocking true story of the rise of the Kinahan crime cartel and its deadly feud with the Hutch gang.”

Uncle repeatedly raped two young nephews

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court

A Dublin man who repeatedly raped his two nephews when they were small boys has been jailed for eight years.

James Maher (64) inflicted “pain and violence” on his young nephews, who were aged just eight and six when he started abusing them 37 years ago, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard today.

One victim described how Maher abused him “like an animal” and both brothers described turning to drugs as a way of coping with the pain of the abuse.

Noel Kirwan murder accused to face non-jury trial

Special Criminal Court

A man charged with the murder of Noel ‘Duck Egg’ Kirwan will face trial at the Special Criminal Court.

Judges today granted an application by the DPP to try Jason Keating (26) at the non-jury court.

Earlier this month, at Dublin District Court, Mr Keating, of Lower Main Street, Rush, Co Dublin was charged with the murder of Noel Kirwan (62) outside his house at St Ronan’s Drive, Clondalkin, Dublin 22 on December 22nd, 2016.

At today’s brief hearing, State solicitor Michael O’Donovan made an application for Mr Keating to be tried before the Special Criminal Court.
