82-year-old has jail term cut over 1960′s abuse of girl

An 82-year-old man jailed for indecently assaulting an eight-year-old girl 50 years ago has had his jail term cut on appeal.

Jack Donohue (82), of Holdenstown, Baltinglass, Co Wicklow, had pleaded guilty to two counts of indecently assaulting an eight year old girl in the county on dates between September 1, 1968 and September 11, 1969.

He was sentenced at Wicklow Circuit Crimnal Court to two years imprisonment with the final six months suspended by Judge Michael O’Shea on April 7, 2017.

“Out of his head” driver avoids increased sentence for causing death of friend

A Kildare man jailed for dangerous driving causing the death of one of his best friends has been spared an increased jail sentence despite an appeal by prosecutors.

Keith Jackson Fleming (26), with an address at Glenshane, Kilteel, Co Kildare, had pleaded guilty at Naas Circuit Criminal Court to dangerous driving causing the death of Dara Cottuli at Old Milltown, Kill, in the county on November 28, 2015. He also pleaded guilty to driving without a license or insurance and failing to give a sample.

Limerick man jailed for six years for violent disorder

Special Criminal Court

A Limerick man found guilty of violent disorder has been jailed for six years today by the Special Criminal Court.

He was also found guilty of stabbing a cyclist in the leg over compensation for a road accident and jailed for three years. Both sentences are to run concurrently.

Larry McCarthy (37) was among a number of people who threatened to use “unlawful violence” and assaulted David Foran (33), who earlier that month had been knocked down and then offered compensation by a motorcyclist.

Former National Hunt jockey has jail sentence for theft cut on appeal

A former National Hunt jockey jailed for theft and handling stolen property has had his prison sentence cut on appeal.

Robert Widger (38), with an address at Poplar Drive, Carriganard, Six Cross Roads, Waterford, pleaded guilty to theft and possession of stolen property at Bog Road, Monamintra, on dates between September 21 and October 21, 2014.

He was given an effective two year jail term at Waterford Circuit Criminal Court earlier this month.
Widger successfully appealed his sentence today, with the Court of Appeal holding that a 12 month jail term would have met the objective of sentencing in this case.

Man loses challenge to constitutionality of mandatory minimum firearms sentences

A Dublin man has lost a challenge to the constitutionality of mandatory minimum sentence provisions for possession of a firearm on more than one occasion.

Wayne Ellis (35), with an address at Landen Road, Ballyfermot, had pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of a firearm in suspicious circumstances as well as certain articles at Knocklyon Shopping Centre on July 5, 2012. Judge Mary Ellen Ring gave him a wholly suspended sentence on May 26, 2014.

Mum-of-three jailed for importing cocaine

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court

A mother-of-three has been jailed after she admitted importing €70,000 of cocaine into Dublin airport.

Jade Seddon (25) had just over one kilo of cocaine in a suitcase when she flew in from Brussels.

Seddon, of Lees Road, Oldham, Manchester pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to importation of the drugs at Dublin Airport on March 30, 2017.

After her arrest, the UK national admitted to gardaí that she had flown to Amsterdam to collect a package and she knew it contained cocaine. She said she was to meet a man in Dublin and would receive €3,000.
