Pensioner returned to jail for sexual abuse

An elderly Dublin man who spent time in jail for indecently assaulting two brothers has returned to prison to serve a further year for similar abuse of a third brother.

The 72-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told gardai he was so drunk he couldn’t recall sexually abusing his victim in the early 1980s.

The court heard the man would invite the then seven-year-old into his bed when he knew nobody else was in the house and rub his penis off the child’s naked backside.

Supreme Court rules Minister must “reconsider” decision to deport man with alleged links to Islamic terrorism

The Supreme Court has ruled that the Minister for Justice must reconsider a decision to remove an Algerian man with alleged links to Islamic terrorism from the State.

The State claimed the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is involved with Islamic terrorism and was convicted of terrorism offences in Algeria and France.

The Minister issued a deportation order after gardaí informed the Department of Justice the activities of the man and his associates were “of serious concern” and “contrary to the State’s security”.

Garda tells Tribunal she never received “instruction” to inform Commissioner’s Office that allegation was false

A garda officer has told the Charleton tribunal that she was never directed to inform the Office of the Garda Commissioner that an allegation of serious sexual abuse against whistleblower Sgt Maurice McCabe was false.

Inspector Karen Duffy held the rank of sergeant and was acting inspector in the office of now retired assistant commissioner Kieran Kenny in 2014, the tribunal heard.

In May 2014, she was instructed by Mr Kenny to forward to the Garda Commissioner correspondence from Chief Supt James Sheridan reporting an allegation of abuse against Sgt McCabe.

Nigerian man jailed for transporting €140k in cocaine

A Nigerian man caught transporting cocaine valued at €140,000 following a “controlled delivery” of a suspicious package has been jailed for four and a half years.

Anthony Eya (42) was stopped in his car with the drugs following a surveillance operation put in place by gardai after customs officers alerted them to the arrival of a suspicious package.

Eya, formerly of Park View, Ballyowen Lane, Lucan, Co Dublin pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of the drugs for sale or supply at Ballyowen Lane on August 28, 2012.

Non-jury court to rule on Freddie Thompson’s bid to have murder charge dismissed

Judges at the Special Criminal Court will rule next month on an application by Frederick “Freddie” Thompson for the non-jury court to dismiss a murder charge against him.

Mr Thompson (36), with an address at Loreto Road, Maryland, Dublin 8, is charged with the murder of David Douglas (55) at Bridgefoot Street in Dublin on July 1st last year.

The court today heard submissions from Michael O’Higgins SC, for the accused, and Sean Gillane SC, for the prosecution.

Mr O’Higgins told the court that his client was making the application under Section 4E of the Criminal Justice Act 1999.

Singer Tommy Fleming awarded damages over TV station’s copyright breach

A High Court judge has found that singer Tommy Fleming suffered “a serious setback” following illegal broadcasts of his Voice of Hope DVD on an Irish television station and is entitled to damages.

The singer, his wife and manager Tina Mitchell Fleming and their company TF Productions were awarded a total of €150,000 damages against the broadcaster Irish TV, which is currently in liquidation.

They had sued Irish TV after the station broadcast a promotional DVD sent out by the singer in relation to his 2004 recording “Voice of Hope” under the title the “Tommy Fleming ….read more
