Harassment trial hears evidence of common “literary features”

The jury in the trial of a detective accused of harassing a woman by sending abusive material has been shown evidence of literary features common to the material and to documents linked to the accused.

Eve Doherty (49), a detective sergeant based in Dublin, denies harassing Elizabeth Howlin between September 2011 and March 2013 and making false statements on two dates in March 2013 claiming Ms Howlin was perverting the course of justice.

Horseman awarded €92k in damages against trainer Margaret Mullins

A man who injured his shoulder while loading a horse onto a lorry for well-known trainer Margaret Mullins has been awarded €92,000 damages by the High Court.

65-year-old James Foley sued Ms Mullins of Canterbrook Stud, Doninga Goresbridge Co Kilkenny arising out of an incident that occurred at the Stud on November 18th, 2013.

Mr Foley said he sustained the injuries after a horse he placed into a lorry became spooked, causing him to fall.

Giving judgement, Mr Justice Michael Hanna said he was satisfied the defendant had been negligent and Mr Foley was entitled to damages totalling €92,000 plus his legal ….read more

Woman found out she was grandmother after toddler with DNA results arrived on doorstep

A woman found out she was a grandmother after a toddler and her older brother turned up on her doorstep with DNA test results, a court heard today.

The grandmother, who was seeking access visits with her granddaughter, told the Dublin District Family Court that up until last summer she was under the impression that the girl in question was her nephew’s daughter.

But then last summer, the young girl and her brother turned up at the grandmother’s door, with results from a DNA test, showing that the grandmother’s son was father of the young girl.

Two wanted over attempted murder of PSNI officer granted leave to seek judicial review

Two Dublin men wanted in Northern Ireland on charges including the attempted murder of a PSNI officer have been granted leave to apply for judicial review.

The applications concern an alleged failure by Gardaí to provide them with information and records following their arrest in 2015.

Ciaran Maguire (29), of Kippure Park, Finglas South and Sean Paul Farrell (32), of Stannaway Road, Kimmage, are wanted in connection with the attempted murder of a police officer in 2015 and possession of explosives with intent to endanger life. Both men face life imprisonment on both counts if found guilty.

Distraught mother granted safety order against teen daughter

A distraught mother was today granted a five-year safety order against her teenage daughter who struggles with mental health issues.

The daughter, who just completed her Leaving Cert, suffers from bipolar disorder, the mother told the Dublin District Family Court.

She said her daughter recently went on medication and had been feeling better, but a psychologist recommended that she stop taking sleeping tablets as they are highly addictive. “And now the anxiety is back,” the mother said.

Dad-of-two punched stranger in face

A father-of-two who punched a stranger in the face, fracturing his cheekbone, has been given a suspended sentence.

Colin O’Kelly had been attending a funeral when he punched Dominic O’Keefe, who had been attending a wedding, in the face twice in the early hours of the morning.

O’Kelly (36) with an address in Newcastle Manor Square, Newcastle, Dublin, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Mr O’Keefe at Finnstown Castle Hotel in Lucan on May 1, 2015.
