Garda whistleblower Sgt Maurice McCabe was the subject of “hostility and enmity” within the gardai, the Charleton tribunal has heard.
Sgt McCabe’s barrister Michael McDowell said that while evidence had been given that garda witnesses never discussed Sgt McCabe, he was the subject of “a good deal of hostility and enmity from certain sources in the Cavan/Monaghan division”.
The tribunal was also told Sgt McCabe was bullied, and called a “rat” on social media, Mr McDowell said.

A professional boxer who assaulted a nightclub bouncer has been left without a conviction after receiving the benefit of The Probation Act.
Jamie Kavanagh (27) was part of a group which attacked door staff at Dublin’s Copper Face Jacks nightclub in what the court heard was “an explosion of violence.”
Derek Cooney BL, prosecuting, said that Kavanagh “got caught up” in the brawl with the other men who he had met up with earlier during his father’s funeral in September 2014.

Judges at the Special Criminal Court trial of a man accused of IRA membership will rule on Monday on the admissibility of garda interviews into evidence.
Defence lawyers at the trial of Vincent Banks (47), who the prosecution allege purchased the car that was later used in the fatal shooting of Northern Irish prison officer David Black, are objecting to the admissibility of a number of garda interviews conducted with the accused man.

Lawyers for a former bank executive jailed for his role in a €7.2 billion fraud about the true health of Anglo Irish Bank in 2008 are seeking a Supreme Court appeal.
Last month, the Court of Appeal upheld the criminal convictions of Denis Casey and John Bowe, who were found guilty by a jury at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in July 2016 of conspiring to mislead investors by using interbank loans to make Anglo appear €7.2bn more valuable between March 1 and September 30, 2008.

A convicted sex offender who was given a partly suspended sentence for robbery last May has been jailed after gardaí told a court that he was a danger to society.
In May 2017 Judge Melanie Greally imposed a four-year sentence on Munir Ghariani (26) and, taking into account the time he had spent in custody on this matter, backdated the sentence to May 19, 2016. She suspended the balance of the sentence.
Ghariani admitted attacking the woman and robbing her phone on a street “for the thrill”.

A woman who disguised herself as a man and robbed over €10,000 in cash from a shop worker while on a bike has been given a suspended sentence.
Judge Karen O’Connor said it was a “bizarre” crime but that McGlynn was “acting out of character”.
Ciara McGlynn (43) overheard the manager of a health shop in Blanchardstown Shopping Centre discussing dropping off the store takings to a bank and planned the robbery accordingly, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard. She was caught by gardaí who happened to be on the scene.
