A Dublin man jailed for possessing a hand gun, silencer and ammunition in suspicious circumstances has avoided an increased prison sentence despite an appeal by prosecutors.
Michael Hanney (24), of Marewood Crescent, Ballymun, had pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of a 9mm Makarov pistol, a silencer and three rounds of ammunition at St Margaret’s, Ballymun, on July 13, 2015. He also pleaded guilty to possession of an air pistol at his home on May 13, 2015.
Judge Martin Nolan sentenced Hanney to five years imprisonment with the final two years suspended on July 19, 2016.

A grandmother who agreed to hold a suitcase containing almost €70,000 worth of cannabis will be sentenced next October.
Adrianne Bradley (53) told gardaí she didn’t have a drink or drug problem but admitted that she smoked cannabis “every so often”. She said she hadn’t been given any money and was expecting someone to come back and collect the drugs.
Garda Alan Flaherty told Dean Kelly BL, defending, that gardaí were satisfied that Bradley was vulnerable and used by others. He said she wasn’t linked to any “criminal conduct” and wasn’t involved in selling drugs.

A Tipperary man who raped a 12-year-old boy after luring him down a lane will be sentenced next week.
Andrew Roche (28), with an address in Nelson Street, Clonmel, Tipperary, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to one count of orally raping the boy and one count of anally raping him on a date between December 25, 2008 and March 17, 2009.

A retired schoolteacher has brought a legal challenge aimed at preventing his trial in relation to alleged indecent assaults against boys almost fifty years ago.
The former teacher has been sent forward for trial before Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 16 charges of alleged indent assaults committed against nine boys on dates between September 1968 and 1971.
It is claimed the charges arise out of complaints made by former pupils at the South Dublin School which the man had taught at.

Prosecutors will seek to argue in December that prison sentences imposed on two men for a “fatal burglary” at the home of a 62-year-old were “unduly lenient”.
Cousins Michael Casey (34), with an address at Clonlong Halting Site, Southill, in Limerick and David Casey (22), with an address at Carragh Park, Belcamp, Dublin 17, had pleaded guilty to a series of burglaries, including one at the home of John O’Donoghue at Toomaline, Doon, on August 27, 2015.
Judge Tom O’Donnell sentenced both men at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court to four-and-a-half years imprisonment with the final year suspended on December 15, 2016.

Frederick “Freddie” Thompson is applying to the Special Criminal Court in Dublin to dismiss a murder charge against him, the non-jury court heard today.
Mr Thompson (36), with an address at Loreto Road, Maryland, Dublin 8, is charged with the murder of David Douglas (55) at Bridgefoot Street in Dublin on July 1st last year.
Michael O’Higgins SC told the court that his client was making the application under Section 4E of the Criminal Justice Act 1999.
