Weapons cache found by gardai who searched biker’s club, murder trial hears

Gardai found two shotguns, pepper spray, iron bars, axe handles, knuckle dusters and knives when they searched a bikers’ clubhouse and cars where a man was shot dead.

The weapons were found by gardai investigating the death of Andrew O’Donoghue (51) who died after being shot at Murroe, Co Limerick on June 20, 2015. Alan McNamara (51), of Mountfune, Murroe, Co Limerick has pleaded not guilty to his murder.

Mr McNamara’s stepson Robert Cusack (28), of Abington, Murroe, has pleaded not guilty to impeding Mr McNamara’s apprehension knowing or believing him ….read more

Mayo resident stole €11k worth of equipment from takeaway

A Mayo resident who has admitted theft of over €11,000 of equipment from a Castlebar takeaway will be sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in November.

Yasir Ali (29) with an address at Waterside, Ballinrobe, Co Mayo, pleaded guilty to burglary at Thomas Street Takeaway, Thomas Street, Castlebar on May 18, 2015.

The equipment comprised a large commercial freezer, deep fat fryers, a commercial hot plate burger fryer, a medium freezer, microwave and food blender. Other items included stainless steel mixing bowls and mixing trays, a chip holder, two stainless steel tables and a food chopping board.

Man to be sentenced over serial iPhone theft

A man who took part in the robbery of five phones over a five-day period in five stores around the country will be sentenced later this month.

Viorel Rostas (28) of Swanhall, Belgard Square, Tallaght, Dublin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to stealing five iPhones from five separate Three mobile phone stores around the country.

Today, Detective Garda Ronan Doonan told Garett Baker BL, prosecuting, that Rostas was part of a group of four involved in the theft of phones with a combined value of more than €3,5000 between November 3 and 7, 2015.

Social worker tells tribunal she received “sanitised version” of McCabe file

A social worker with Tusla who was asked to review a file on garda whistleblower Sgt Maurice McCabe had said she was given “a sanitised version”, the Charleton tribunal has heard.

The tribunal is looking into the creation and distribution of files by Tusla and the HSE containing false allegations against Sgt McCabe and whether he was the target of a smear campaign.

The Tusla file was opened when a young woman identified as Ms D sought counselling in 2013 about a previously reported allegation investigated by gardaí in 2006. The DPP decided ….read more

Suspended sentence for bouncer who ruptured casino patron’s testicles

A bouncer who ruptured a patron’s testicles when he kicked out at him following a verbal altercation has been given a suspended sentence.

Alan Foley (46) was working as security at Colossus Casino on Montague Lane in Dublin city centre, when Robert O’Donnell and his three friends tried to gain admittance following their Christmas party.

Mr O’Donnell was allowed in as he was a member but when the other men were refused entry he returned to the door staff to remonstrate with them.

Jail for criminal with 190 previous convictions who drove in to garda van

A man with 190 previous convictions who drove dangerously during a high-speed chase with gardaí has been jailed for two and a half years.

Dean Joyce (24) was convicted in February after a second trial. The jury in his first trial was discharged after a juror fell asleep 15 minutes into the trial.

Joyce, with an address in Rowlagh Park, Clondalkin, Dublin, had pleaded not guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to 11 charges, including endangering gardaí by driving his car into a garda van, four counts of dangerous driving and possession of stolen property in Ballyfermot ….read more
