A 44-year-old woman with schizophrenia has been deemed unfit to stand trial for the murder of a man in his South Dublin home in 2014.
Mercy Peters, originally from Sierra Leone, is charged with murdering Tyrone McKenna (42) on July 17, 2014 at the house they had shared in Marley Court, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14.
At today’s Central Criminal Court hearing, Mr Justice Tony Hunt heard there was an issue to be decided by him about Ms Peters fitness to stand trial.
Mr Paul Burns SC, prosecuting, called a consultant forensic psychiatrist from the Central Mental Hospital (CMH) to give evidence on the issue. ….read more

A garda has gone on trial accused of harassing a State solicitor by describing her as politically corrupt in a series of “hideous” and “vitriolic” letters and emails.
Eve Doherty (49), a garda based in Dublin, has denied harassing Elizabeth Howlin between September 2011 and March 2013 and making false statements claiming that Ms Howlin was perverting the course of justice.
On the first day of a trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, the jury heard that Ms Howlin worked in the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the time.

A father-of-two who threatened to chop off a customer’s head while trying to rob a post office will be sentenced later this month.
George Simpson (30), who was armed with both an air pistol and a hatchet, told gardaí in interview “I’m sorry I had to do it. I owe €14,000. I would be killed.” His counsel said he was referring to a drug debt he owed due to his cocaine habit.

The High Court has dismissed applications, brought by six people who want to oppose claims by the Criminal Assets Bureau that certain assets seized by the bureau as part of its investigation into the Kinahan crime cartel are the proceeds of crime, to have their legal costs covered by the State.
CAB had previously secured Court orders freezing assets it says are the proceeds of crime including jewelry, motorbikes, property and cars following raids conducted as part of its investigation in the Kinahan gang at various locations in March 2016.

A senior Tusla manager has denied there was “any coordination, liaison or collusion” with gardai in creating files containing allegations of sexual abuse against garda whistle blower Sgt Maurice McCabe.
Mr Gerard Lowry, the Tusla manager for Cavan-Monaghan, told Charleton tribunal barrister Pat Marrinan SC that there was no contact with gardai about the file.
The Charleton tribunal is examining claims that allegations of sexual abuse were used as part of a campaign to smear and undermine the reputation of Sgt McCabe. The DPP decided against pressing charges in the case due to lack of ….read more

A woman who was allegedly raped by her husband on Christmas Day in 2003 has denied they had consensual sex.
The 44-year-old Dublin man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to two counts of rape, one count of oral rape and one count of anal rape of his then-wife on December 25, 2003.
The trial has heard the man allegedly raped the woman on the couch after he put their young children to bed on Christmas night. She said she had about seven glasses of wine over the course of the day ….read more
