The Special Criminal Court trial of a Dublin man accused of IRA membership has been listening to a day of legal argument.
Defence lawyers at the trial of Vincent Banks (47), who the prosecution allege purchased the car that was later used in the fatal shooting of Northern Irish prison officer David Black, are objecting to the legality of the accused man’s arrest.
Mr Black, a 52-year-old father of two, was shot dead on November 1st 2012. He was driving to work at Maghaberry prison when the incident occurred.

The sentencing of sports journalist Tom Humphries for the sexual exploitation and defilement of a child has been adjourned to October.
Humphries (54) of Corr Castle, Sutton, Dublin appeared briefly in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court today.
The former Irish Times journalist pleaded guilty last March to six sexual offences against a girl under the age of 17.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of defilement of a child in Dublin between December 5th 2010 and February 19th 2011 and of four counts of inviting a child to participate in a sexually explicit, obscene or indecent act between January 2010 and March 2011.

A 34-year-old Dublin man has been convicted of being the murderer in drag who gunned a man down with a sub-machine gun in a busy car park.
Christopher McDonald, from the East Wall area of Dublin, was found guilty of murder by unanimous jury verdict following a little over two hours of deliberation at the Central Criminal Court.
He had pleaded not guilty to the murder of Keith Walker (36) at the Blanchardstown Pigeon Racing Club car park on Shelerin Road, Clonsilla, Dublin on June 12, 2015.

A man who admitted “brutally” beating a 62-year-old former rugby captain to death has been jailed for five years.
Gary Walsh (35), with an address at The Watercourse, Orwell Park in Templeogue, had been charged with murdering Cathal Sweeney at a mutual friend’s flat in Ashdale Gardens, Terenure in Dublin.
Following two trials in which juries could not agree a verdict, the State accepted his plea of guilty to manslaughter.

A senior Tusla manager has said that the failure by Tusla to correct a series of errors which resulted in false allegations of child abuse being made against garda whistle blower Maurice McCabe were “absolutely coincidences”.
The Charleton tribunal is examining claims that allegations of sexual abuse were used as part of a campaign to smear and undermine the reputation of Sgt McCabe. The DPP decided against pressing charges in the case due to lack of evidence in 2007.

A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering a father-of-three by shooting him with a shotgun in the chest before reloading and shooting him in the head.
Seán Ducque also received a 12-year sentence for the armed robbery a few hours earlier of a taxi driver, who has had to give up his career.
Ducque, of no fixed abode, had admitted killing Kieran Farrelly (33) on 26th October 2014 at Killarney Court, Killarney Street in Dublin. However, the father-of-one said that the deceased had provoked him by threatening to punch his head in.
