Jury sworn-in for trial of father and stepson charged in connection with Limerick murder

A jury has been sworn in for the trial of a father and his stepson charged in connection with the murder of Andrew O’Donoghue in Limerick two years ago.

At the Central Criminal Court today, Alan McNamara (50), of Mountfune, Murroe, Co Limerick pleaded not guilty to murdering Andrew O’Donoghue (51) in Murroe, Co Limerick on June 20, 2015.

His stepson Robert Cusack (28), of Abington, Murroe, Co Limerick pleaded not guilty to impeding the apprehension or prosecution of Mr McNamara, knowing or believing him to have committed the offence of murder or some other arrestable offence.

Adjournment in trial of man arrested in connection with David Black murder

The Special Criminal Court trial of a Dublin man accused of IRA membership has been adjourned until tomorrow morning.

Defence lawyers at the trial of Vincent Banks (47), who the prosecution allege purchased the car that was later used in the fatal shooting of Northern Irish prison officer David Black, are objecting to the legality of the accused man’s arrest.

Mr Black, a 52-year-old father of two, was shot dead on November 1st 2012. He was driving to work at Maghaberry prison when the incident occurred.

Ireland star acquitted of violent disorder

A jury has acquitted Republic of Ireland soccer player Jeff Hendrick of committing violent disorder during a nightclub row in Dublin city four years ago.

During a four day trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, Darren McDermott claimed that after a verbal row in Krystal nightclub Mr Hendrick pulled him out of a taxi. Mr McDermott said he was then chased down a lane by other men.

He was assaulted in the laneway and suffered multiple fractures to his jaw and had his teeth smashed. He had emergency surgery for his injuries and is still receiving medical ….read more

Social worker not contacted about “enormous error” in McCabe records, tribunal hears

A social worker was unable to explain the “total silence” after an error led to false allegations being placed in reports she created on the children of garda whistleblower Sgt Maurice McCabe at the Charleton tribunal.

On 30 April 2014 Laura Connolly, a duty social worker in Cavan town, reviewed the file on Ms D, who had made allegations against Sgt McCabe in 2006 and again in 2013.

The tribunal is examining claims that allegations of sexual abuse were used as part of a campaign to smear and undermine the reputation of Sgt McCabe. The DPP decided against pressing charges in the ….read more

Louth man jailed for IRA membership

A Louth man found guilty of IRA membership has been jailed by the Special Criminal Court for three years.

Michael Connolly (45) of Grange Drive in Dundalk had been observed driving in convoy with another man, who was then found with two improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Last month, the three-judge, non-jury court convicted Connolly, who had denied the charge, of membership of an unlawful organisation, styling itself Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the Irish Republican Army, otherwise the IRA on December 16th, 2014.

Man who strangled girlfriend found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity

A 34-year-old man who “believed he was in the Matrix” and strangled his girlfriend to death in order to save her, has been found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity.

Oisin Conroy told gardai there was a struggle in his mind “between the devil and Jesus” and that a voice came in his head saying he had to kill his then girlfriend Natalie McGuinness.

Mr Conroy with an address at St Joseph’s Terrace, Boyle, Co Roscommon was charged with murdering Natalie McGuinness (23) at The Mews, Mail Coach Road in Sligo on October 28, 2015.
