A male nurse who contacted a female patient on Whatsapp and Facebook was today found guilty of professional misconduct.

Gilbert Hategekimana was working as an agency nurse at the Mater hospital in Dublin on October 3, 2015 when the student teacher presented at the hospital’s Emergency Department.

During the Nursing and Midwifery Board’s fitness to practice inquiry Mr Hategekimana admitted that he took the mobile phone number and address of the student from her patient file. He then sent her messages, rang her and sent her a friend request via Facebook.

Social worker tells tribunal of “human error” in McCabe abuse allegation report

A social worker has told the Charleton tribunal that “human error” and “an oversight” led to her failing to notice that two different alleged abuse victims were named in a report she had been working on in the one file.

The tribunal is examining claims that allegations of sexual abuse were used as part of a campaign to smear and undermine the reputation of garda whistle-blower Sgt Maurice McCabe. The DPP decided against pressing charges in the case due to lack of evidence in 2007.

Grandad jailed over violent attack in pet shop

A grandfather who became involved in a violent incident in a pet shop after his son got into a dispute about a parking space has been jailed for 18 months.

Noel Dempsey (61) of Stannaway Road, Dublin 12, initially denied charges of assault causing harm to Mark Eagers and violent disorder.

On the second day of his trial before a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court jury he asked to be re-arraigned and pleaded guilty to the charge of violent disorder at Purrrfect Pets, Longmile Road on February 5, 2011.

Elderly brothers beaten to death in “vicious” assault in their own home, trial hears

A 30-year-old Mayo man has admitted killing two elderly brothers, who were beaten to death in their Castlebar home four years ago.

Alan Cawley of Four Winds, Corrinbla, Ballina has gone on trial at the Central Criminal Court, charged with murdering the men, one of whom was disabled and was scalded during the assault.

He has pleaded not guilty to murdering both Thomas Blaine and John (Jack) Blaine on 10th July 2013 at New Antrim Street, Castlebar.

Uncle who raped young niece jailed for 10 years

A man who raped his young niece and molested her sister has been jailed for ten years.

Francis Rafferty (68) admitted the sexual assault of his young nieces but said he believed his behaviour was harmless.

Rafferty of Botanic Avenue, Drumcondra, Dublin pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting one girl when she was aged between nine and 12 years old between 2005 and 2008.

After a trial at the Central Criminal Court, a jury convicted him of two counts of raping this victim and of sexually assaulting her older sister. He was acquitted of two other counts of raping the younger girl. He had ….read more

Man goes on trial accused of raping wife on Christmas day

A 44-year-old Dublin man has gone on trial accused of raping his wife on Christmas Day 2003.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to two counts of rape, one count of oral rape and one count of anal rape of the woman on December 25, 2003.

Opening the trial John O’Kelly SC, prosecuting, told the jury that since 1990 the fact that two people are married does not exempt behaviour that is rape from being a criminal act.
