Reserved judgement in businessman’s bid to halt extradition over £5 million tax fraud

The High Court has reserved judgement on reopened extradition proceedings involving a construction company director, wanted in the UK over his role in a £5 million tax fraud.

Thomas Joseph O’Connor (49), with an address at Cloughbeirne, The Walk, Roscommon, was sentenced in his absence to four-and-a-half years in prison in January 2007 for defrauding the British revenue.

After being convicted following a six-week trial at Blackfriars Crown Court, Mr O’Connor, who was on bail, did not attend court for the sentencing hearing. He had returned to Ireland but was arrested on an extradition warrant in 2009.

Man pleads not guilty to murdering woman (23) by reason of insanity

Central Criminal Court

A 34-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to murdering a woman in Sligo by reason of insanity.

Oisin Conroy with an address at St Joseph’s Terrace, Boyle, Co Roscommon is charged with murdering Natalie McGuinness (23) at The Mews, Mail Coach Road in Sligo on October 28, 2015.

Mr Conroy was arraigned before the Central Criminal Court this morning and pleaded not guilty to murdering Ms McGuinness by reason of insanity.

A jury of six men and six women was sworn in to hear the case, which begins tomorrow and is expected to last up to two days.

Witness tells tribunal of feeling “wave of panic” over including more series abuse allegations in McCabe report

A witness at the Disclosures Tribunal described feeling a “wave of panic” when she realised she had incorrectly described abuse allegations in a report she wrote in 2013, increasing the severity of allegations against Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe.

The tribunal was set up to investigate an alleged smear campaign against Sgt Maurice McCabe.

In its first section, it is examining whether files created by other State agencies were created and distributed or otherwise used by senior members of our police force in inventing or furthering a false allegation of sexual abuse against Sgt McCabe.

Non-jury court finds it doesn’t have jurisdiction to hand over transcripts to GSOC investigation

The Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission must apply to the High Court for transcripts relating to appearances before the Special Criminal Court of Adrian Crevan Mackin, who shot dead Garda Anthony Golden in 2015 before killing himself.

The Special Criminal Court was told on Monday that a “public interest investigation” has been launched by GSOC following complaints it received about “the nature of some interactions it is alleged members of An Garda Siochana had with Mackin both prior and subsequent to his arrest in January 2015.”

The court heard that the investigation is currently ongoing.

Alleged assault victim tells court that “aggressive” Ireland star dragged him out of taxi

A Dublin man has said that he was left with multiple fractures to his jaw following an attack by a group of men minutes after professional footballer Jeff Hendrick dragged him from a taxi stopped at traffic lights.

Mr Hendrick (25), originally from Kilmore Drive, Artane, Dublin but now living in the UK, pleaded not guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to committing violent disorder at Harcourt Street, Dublin on October 12, 2013.

Partner of man who died from brain haemorrhage after being sent home from hospital three times seeks to quash inquest result

The partner of a man who died from a brain haemorrhage after he was sent home from hospital three times after complaining of headaches has launched a High Court challenge aimed at quashing the result of his inquest.

The action has been brought by Gwen Bradley against Mr. Philip Comyn, who in his capacity as coroner for Cork City held an inquest into the death of Mr Evan Morrissey on April 11th/12th last.

Mr Morrissey died, aged 28 years, on March 22nd 2014 at Cork University Hospital (CUH), after being transferred there from South Tipperary General Hospital (STGH) some days earlier.
