A father of four who was captured on CCTV stealing bicycles from a bike shed at an apartment complex has been jailed for two years.

Jonathan Dunne (27) admitted to gardaí that he had set out that night to steal bikes after he was shown footage from the complex of him carrying a bolt cutters.

Garda Brian Hunt told Elva Duffy BL, prosecuting, that two bikes and three bicycle wheels were taken during the burglary after a large hole was a cut into a wire cage that acted as a bike shed. The cage had been locked and secured.

Three face trial for IRA membership

Special Criminal Court

Three Dublin men accused of IRA membership will face trial next year at the non-jury Special Criminal Court.

Jonathan Hawthorn (44) of Ballintyre Downs in Ballinteer, James Geraghty (60) of Dolphin House in Dolphin’s Barn, and Donal O’Ceallaigh (32) with an address on Beach Road, Sandymount are all charged with membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the IRA on September 14th, 2016.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt, presiding, sitting with Judge Martin Nolan and Judge Flann Brennan, fixed a trial date of July 2nd, 2018.

The trial is expected to last three weeks.

Pensioner sent series of “poison pen” letters to female garda over penalty points

A 72-year-old pensioner who sent a series of threatening “poison pen” letters to a female garda after she issued him with a penalty points notice has avoided a jail sentence.

Patrick McClean, a retired seaman, felt aggrieved after he was issued a fixed fine notice by Garda Claire McGuigan last year. He went home and wrote six “vile” and “odious” letters that he then sent to her at Raheny Garda Station, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard today.

Abuse allegations against Maurice McCabe put to him “out of the blue”, tribunal judge notes

Allegations of child sexual abuse made against Garda whistleblower Sgt Maurice McCabe “came out of the blue” when they were put to him nine years later, a Tribunal Judge has said.

Social worker Rhona Murphy told the Disclosures Tribunal that a garda colleague of Sgt McCabe named him as the alleged abuser of his daughter, identified as Ms D.

The Tribunal, chaired by Justice Mr Peter Charleton, is investigating whether there was an alleged smear campaign against garda whistleblower Sgt McCabe.

Court quashes murder conviction of man who represented himself during trial

A man who dismissed a team of lawyers during his trial for murder, and recalled his own nephew for cross-examination, has had his conviction quashed on appeal.

Tadhg Butler (36), with an address at Seafield in Tramore, Co Waterford but originally from Kilkenny had pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to the murder of Michael O’Dwyer (25) at that address on January 10, 2014.

Butler dismissed his legal team on day six of his trial for murder and recalled his nephew, Mr Anthony O’Grady, which saw a “radically different version of events put to him” by Butler compared to ….read more

Jail for man who made threats at solicitor’s office

A man who made threats to a member of staff at a solicitor’s office has been jailed for two and a half years.

Staff at the office told gardaí that Joseph McKeon (41) was saying “crazy stuff” and threatened one woman that he would “break her jaw and blow her head off.” He also damaged a door.

Garda Joseph Bell agreed with prosecuting counsel that McKeon’s assertions about money belonging to him in relation to a claim appeared to be a figment of his imagination.
