Homeless mum living in tent outside council offices, High Court told

A woman and her young son, who have spent several weeks living in a tent outside Carlow County Council’s offices, have launched a High Court challenge over the local authority’s refusal to provide them with emergency accommodation.

The action has been taken by Karen Middleton and her six year old son.

On Monday their barrister, David Leonard Bl, told the High Court that the two have been in the tent since June 12th after the council refused to provide them with any further emergency accommodation.

Single mum granted safety order against 18-year-old son

A single mother has been granted a five-year safety order against her 18-year-old son after telling a court he assaulted her.

The mother told the Dublin District Family Court that she was previously granted a short-term protection order against her son. She said she showed this to him but he tore it up and threw it in her face.

The mother, who works as a hairdresser, said her son screamed and shouted at her so much on that occasion that her neighbours rang the gardaí.

Nursing home assistant jailed for stealing almost €20k from elderly resident

A nursing home care assistant who stole almost €20,000 from the bank account of an elderly resident has been jailed.

Carol Cullen (47) had been given two cheques by the 86 year old woman, with whom she had become friendly, before forging further cheques and stealing a total of €19,900 from her account.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard Cullen, a mother of four, was not living a lavish lifestyle and the money had been used on household expenditure.

Council seeks to close down newly-opened Dublin bar/restaurant

Dublin City Council has launched High Court proceedings aimed at closing down a large city centre based bar/restaurant until the premises complies with building regulations.

The action has been brought in relation to ‘Roberta’s’ restaurant and bar, which is located on the first floor of Dollard House at Wellington Quay and Essex Street East Dublin 2.

DCC claims the restaurant exposes its staff and customers to an unacceptable and unnecessary risk by acting in clear disregard of building control requirements.

DCC wants the bar/restaurant to cease operating until a number of mandatory steps are taken.

Man cleared of raping acquaintance at house party is jailed for assault

A young man who was acquitted of raping an acquaintance at a house party but found guilty of assaulting her has been jailed for a year.

The 21-year-old Sligo man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, went on trial in the Central Criminal Court last month charged with rape and assault causing harm in Sligo on June 26, 2014. He pleaded not guilty.

The jury found him not guilty of rape but guilty of assaulting the woman, who was bitten during the incident.

Suspended sentence extended for man over aggravated burglary at former wife’s home

A man who had difficulty accepting his former wife had moved on and started a new relationship has had the suspended part of a sentence for aggravated burglary at her home extended.

Andrzej Topolski (50), with a last address in Castlebar, Co Mayo, had pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary at his former wife’s house in Blackfort Manor, Castlebar on March 22 2015.

Topolski had served 11 months in custody awaiting sentence before Judge Rory McCabe at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court suspended the unserved balance of a three-year term on conditions on July 5, 2016.
