“He blew him to bits”: witness tells murder trial of moment cross-dressing gunman opened fire

When a gunman dressed as a woman opened fire in a busy car park it was lucky that only one person died, a witness at a murder trial said today.

Mark Kelly is a member of the Blanchardstown Pigeon Racing Club and was talking to fellow pigeon enthusiast Keith Walker in the club car park when a gunman in a wig and women’s gym clothes walked up and shot Mr Walker with a sub-machine gun.

Mr Kelly told the trial of Christopher McDonald that there were children nearby and it was “lucky there wasn’t more people killed”.

Trial date set for man charged with murder of Olivia Dunlea

A date has been set for the trial of a man charged with murdering a woman at her home in County Cork.

The Central Criminal Court today fixed May 30, 2018 as the date for the trial to commence before a judge and jury.

Darren Murphy (40), of Dan Desmond Villas in Passage West, Co Cork is alleged to have murdered Olivia Dunlea (36) at her home in Pembroke Crescent on February 17, 2013.

Ms Dunlea was found dead with a number of stab wounds in an upstairs room of her home following a fire at the house.

Six-year sentence for Tipperary man caught at traffic stop with pipe-bombs

Special Criminal Court

A Tipperary man who pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court to possession of two pipe-bombs, a pistol and ammunition has received a six year sentence.

Dylan Cahill (24), of Lower Irishtown, Clonmel, Co Tipperary pleaded guilty last April to the possession of a .380 calibre Colt semi-automatic pistol and four rounds of .380 calibre ammunition at Sradrine, Glefarne, Co Leitrim on May 13th, 2015.

He also pleaded guilty to the possession of two improvised explosive devices, or pipe-bombs, at the same place on the same date.

Trial date set for man accused of murdering 90-year-old Paddy Lyons

A date has been set for the trial of a young man charged with the murder of a 90-year-old pensioner in Waterford in February.

Ross Outram (26), of Ferryland, Waterford Road, Clonmel in Co Tipperary has been charged with the murder of Paddy Lyons at Loughleagh, Ballysaggart, Lismore, Co Waterford at a time unknown between February 24 and 25 last.

The Central Criminal Court today fixed June 4, 2018 as the date for the trial to commence before a judge and jury.

Mr Lyons was discovered slumped in a chair at his home with blood on his face and injuries to his head. ….read more

Man tells his murder trial that he “lost control” and shot deceased twice

A 33-year-old Dublin man has told his murder trial that he was ‘severely intoxicated’ when he shot a man twice with a shotgun, in what the State said was ‘as close to an assassination as you could possibly get’.

Father-of-one Seán Ducque told the Central Criminal Court that he lost control and fired the loaded shotgun he was holding after the deceased threatened to punch him.

Mr Ducque, of no fixed abode, was giving evidence in his defence today, having pleaded not guilty to murdering Kieran Farrelly on 26th October 2014 at Killarney Court, Killarney Street in Dublin.

Monaghan man jailed for IRA membership

A Monaghan man who was using his land and land belonging to his mother-in-law for dissident republican activity has been jailed for three years today by the Special Criminal Court.

Jim Smyth (44), with an address at Aghalissabeagh, Scotstown, County Monaghan was convicted last month of membership of an unlawful organization, styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the IRA, on November 25th, 2015.

During his trial, the three-judge, non-jury court heard evidence from Chief Superintendent Christopher Mangan, who said that it was his belief that Smyth was an IRA member on the date in question.
