Man admits careless driving causing death of Mayo woman

A man has pleaded guilty to careless driving causing the death of a pedestrian in her 70s outside a supermarket in Co Mayo last year.

Maureen Hopkins, of Rosmoney, Carrowholly, Westport, died after she was struck by a lorry in the car park of Supervalu, Westport, on June 6, 2024.

At a sitting of Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court, Mihail Tanasevici (41) of Woodford Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, pleaded guilty to a single count of careless driving causing death.

Mark Ryan BL, defending, told the court that Tanasevici had been driving as part of his employment at the time of the collision.

He was driving at a speed of around 2km per hour, the court heard.

Tanasevici, originally from Romania, has no previous convictions and has been in Ireland for five or six years.

A probation report was ordered and Tanasevici is due back in court next February to face two further charges.

He is due to be sentenced on March 6 next.
