A man who stole over €34,000 in multiple thefts within a single week from a supermarket in County Mayo has an ‘egregious addiction’ to gambling, a court has heard.

The thefts took place at Lidl, New Road, Westport before and after Christmas 2023.

Mantas Kerusauska (39) of Lakeview, Rathbawn, Castlebar, Co Mayo, will be sentenced next March after he pleaded guilty to three thefts at a sitting of Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court.

He admitted stealing €11,250 from the supermarket on Christmas Eve 2023, €10,700 a few days later on December 29 and €12,300 on New Year’s Eve 2023.

Defence counsel Desmond Dockery SC said his client’s criminal activities could be attributed in whole or in part to his ‘particularly egregious’ gambling addiction.

Kerusauska was remanded on bail for sentencing on March 3 next.
