A prisoner who stole €200 from the till of a south Dublin supermarket while struggling with addiction and the effects of a serious brain injury has been sentenced to 10 months at Tallaght District Court.
David Cummins (37), who is currently serving a sentence at Cloverhill Prison, pleaded guilty to theft at SuperValu, Knocklyon Shopping Centre, Knocklyon Road, Dublin 16, on April 16, 2023.
Gardaí told the court that Cummins put his hand behind the counter and grabbed €200 in cash from the till of the shop.
After receiving reports of a suspicious male in the Knocklyon area, gardaí carried out inquiries which led to Cummins being identified.
The court also heard that Cummins has more than 80 previous convictions.
Defending barrister, Ethan Foley BL, said his client had suffered a difficult upbringing in Ballymun and that his father had died suddenly in 2004.
Counsel said Cummins had also suffered a serious road traffic accident which left him with a brain injury and ongoing side effects affecting his decision-making abilities.
The court heard he subsequently turned to drugs and is currently serving a prison sentence. Counsel asked the court to be as lenient as possible and said Cummins was pleading guilty.
Judge John King imposed a 10-month sentence, backdated to Friday, May 8, and ordered it to run concurrently with the sentence Cummins is currently serving.
