Dublin man charged with IRA membership remanded in custody

A Dublin man who was charged with IRA membership at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court last Saturday has been remanded in custody until October.

Michael Barr (34), of Premier Square in Finglas, is charged with membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the IRA on July 18.

Counsel for the accused man, Ms Siobhán Ní Chúlacháin BL, today told the non-jury court that there was no application for bail and there was consent to a remand in custody for service of the book of evidence.

Man who avoided prison after failing to pay VAT on €1.4m in sales is jailed after successful DPP appeal

A PHOTOGRAPHER who avoided a prison term after failing to pay VAT on €1.4m worth of sales from his business was jailed today when a court ruled the original sentence of community service was “unduly lenient”.

In 2010, a jury found freelance photographer Niall Williamson (53) guilty of 85 charges relating to tax offences between 1998 and 2004.

Sentencing Williamson, of the Old Schoolhouse, Dunkitt, Kilmacow, Co Kilkenny, to 240 hours’ community service in April 2012, Judge Olive Buttimer said she saw “no point whatsoever” in jailing him and wanted the accused to put ….read more

A MAN who was ‘highly strung and emotional’ when he kicked in the door of his ex-girlfriend’s house has been convicted of breaching a safety order.

Garreth Lokko (23) was fined €100 and paid €20 in compensation for the damage done to the door.

Six dissidents jailed for bombing offences secure release from prison

Six dissident Republicans who were serving lengthy prison sentences for bombing offences in the UK have been released from Portlaoise Prison after they launched High Court challenges against the legality of their detention.

The six are brothers Aiden (aged 37) and Robert Hulme (34), Darren Mulholland (34), James McCormack (47), Anthony Hyland (41) and Liam Grogan (36) who claimed they were entitled to immediate release due to significant differences between the sentencing systems in Ireland and the UK contained in a recent Supreme Court judgment.

Solicitor for man who said he helped dispose of Roma teen's body gives evidence at murder trial

A man who said he helped dispose of Marioara Rostas’s body said he wanted to give a statement against the man charged with murdering her, despite knowing he too could be charged, his solicitor has said.

The solicitor, Bridget Rouse, was today called by the defence, after the prosecution closed its case in the trial of the Dublin man charged with her murder.

Alan Wilson (35) of New Street Gardens has pleaded not guilty to the 18-year-old’s murder at a house on Brabazon Street, The Coombe between January 7 and January 8, 2008.

The trial of the Dublin man charged with murdering Marioara Rostas has heard that gardai destroyed notes of meetings held with the main witness.

A garda involved in the Witness Protection Programme (WPP) was giving evidence at the Central Criminal Court this morning.

Alan Wilson (35) of New Street Gardens has pleaded not guilty to the 18-year-old’s murder at O’Hanlon’s house on Brabazon Street, The Coombe between January 7 and January 8, 2008.
