Evidence of crucial interviews with firearms accused not admissible

Evidence of garda interviews conducted with two men accused of the possession of an assault rifle and a handgun is not admissible at their trial, the Special Criminal Court has ruled.

Vincent Ryan (22) and his co-accused Darragh Evans (23) have pleaded not [NOT] guilty to the possession of an AKM assault rifle and Webley-make revolver MkV1 at Clonshaugh Walk, Coolock, Dublin 17 on September 15th, 2011.

A 50-year-old man has been extradited to France, where he has been convicted of a Halloween night murder in his absence.

William Joseph O’Connor will face an automatic retrial on a charge of murdering a man in Calais 11 years ago.

O’Connor was found guilty of stabbing Jean Jacques Berteloot a number of times while stealing the French man’s car and phone on the night of October 31 or early on the morning of November 1, 2002.

Limerick man who beat school boy unconscious in unprovoked attack must await sentence fate

A Limerick man who left a school boy with permanent brain damage after beating him unconscious in an unprovoked attack must wait to learn if his appeal against his 15-year sentence has been successful.

The man, who was a teenager in the care of the HSE at the time of the attack, was caught on camera inflicting 65 kicks and stamps to his 16-year-old victim’s head, along with two stamps to his chest and 26 punches.

Jury to begin deliberating in Limerick murder trial

The jury is due to begin deliberating in the trial of an electrician accused of the fatal shooting of a bread deliveryman in Limerick three years ago.

John Coughlan (33) of Pineview Gardens, Moyross has pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to the manslaughter of Daniel Treacy (35) at Topaz garage, Caherdavin, Ennis Road on February 22, 2010.

But the court was told the plea was not acceptable and a jury of seven women and five men was sworn in for the two-week trial.

A recidivist burglar who assaulted and threatened to kill a 97-year-old woman in her home has had his six-year jail term increased by four years after a successful appeal by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

After gaining access to the victim’s home by offering to tidy her gardens, Paul McDonagh (43) held his hand over the elderly woman’s mouth with such force that it cut her lip and repeatedly told her he was going to kill her. He then fled with the woman’s purse.

The Court of Criminal Appeal has ordered the preparation of a probation report on sex attacker Anthony Lyons, in advance of the State’s appeal on grounds of undue leniency against the six-month sentence imposed on the 52-year-old last year.

Lyons, who is a high-profile aviation broker, was jailed for six months by Judge Desmond Hogan in July 2012 for attacking and sexually assaulting a woman in the early hours of the morning of October 3, 2010.
