Three men appear before Special Criminal Court on explosives and IRA membership charges

Three men have appeared before the Special Criminal Court this morning charged with explosives and IRA membership offences.

Gareth Mulley (44), William Burns (38) and David Gallagher (37) were arrested by members of the Special Detective Unit on Sunday evening in Kilcurry Co Louth as part of ongoing investigations in to the activities of dissident republicans.

Mr Burns, of Kerrera St, Ardoyne, Belfast, Co Antrim and his two co-accused are charged with the unlawful possession of the explosive substances PETN and RDX, an adapted 50 litre beer keg, 50 kg of ammonium nitrate homemade explosive, an improvised detonation cord, an improvised ….read more

Murder trial hears from accused man's mother

A murder trial has heard that the accused told his mother he had nothing to do with the death of Shane Rossiter.

Maurice Power (31) of Dranganbeg, Kilmoyler, Cahir has pleaded not guilty to murdering Mr Rossiter (29) in Tipperary on October 17 2012.

Mother of the accused, Janet Fullop, was giving evidence at the Central Criminal Court today.

Mr Dominic McGinn SC defending confirmed with Janet Fullop that she had told gardai previously about the relationship between her son and Shane Rossiter.

Solicitor struck off by High Court president

The President of the High Court has struck off a Midland’s based solicitor who the Law Society Disciplinary Tribunal found guilty of several counts of professional misconduct.

Today the President of the High Court Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns made orders striking off solicitor David Walsh formerly practising as David Walsh and Co at Mount Street Mullingar and Kilree Street, Bagenalstown, Co Carlow.

The Law Society, represented By Remy Farrell SC, sought the orders on grounds including that Mr Walsh, Sallyfield House, Tyrellspass, Co Westmeath is not a fit person to be a member of the profession.

Jury fails to reach verdict on murder charge against Dublin youth

A jury has failed to reach a verdict on whether a 20-year-old Dublin youth is guilty of murdering a German student, having already found him guilty of assaulting another in the city a year-and-a-half ago.

Thomas Heinrich and Robert Rinker were stabbed on St Anthony’s Road in Rialto on December 1st, 2012. Mr Rinker survived, but 22-year-old Mr Heinrich died.

Wesley Kelly (20) of St Anthony’s Road had pleaded not guilty to murdering Mr Heinrich and to assault causing harm to Mr Rinker.

High Court orders extradition of Kildare man over alleged conspiracy to cause explosions in England

The High Court has ordered the surrender of a Co Kildare man to British authorities to face a charge of conspiring to cause explosions in England.

Jason Patrick Buckley, with an address at Harbour View Apartments, Athy, Co Kildare, is alleged to have been involved in a conspiracy to cause explosions in Staffordshire, England, in the summer of 2012.

The 26-year-old, who denies the charge, was brought before the High Court in September 2013 by gardaí on foot of a European Arrest Warrant issued in May of that year.

Gardai tell murder trial there was no discussion with accused before interview

A barrister for a Cork man charged with murdering the woman he said he loved has suggested that gardai had ‘a discussion’ with him before the recorder was turned on in his final interview.

Darren Murphy (37) has admitted killing 36-year-old Olivia Dunlea at her home in Pembroke Crescent, Passage West, Co Cork on February 17 2013.

However, Murphy from Dan Desmond Village in Passage West has pleaded not guilty to murdering the mother-of-three, whom he had been dating for three months.

He has also pleaded guilty to arson on her home after stabbing her and is on trial at the Central Criminal ….read more
